Campgrounds and RV parks near Annville, KY

The Daniel Boone National Forest anchors most trips, with four ranger districts (Cumberland, London, Stearns, and Redbird) offering hiking, fishing, picnicking, backpacking, horse riding, and OHV trail riding. Day hikes, waterfall walks, and paddling on nearby lakes and streams fill out most itineraries. Off-road riding is a signature activity here. Wildcat Adventures Offroad Park offers a large trail network for ATVs, dirt bikes, and side-by-sides, and Backstreet Outdoor Adventures Campground is set up for riders who want to camp near the trails. Red Hill Horse Camp caters to equestrians using forest trails in the Redbird district. Water-based options include fishing and paddling on the Rockcastle and South Fork Kentucky rivers. Families staying at Cross Mountain Campground can use on-site hiking trails and open play areas without leaving the property.

Southeastern Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cold winters, and rainfall is spread fairly evenly across the year with heavier downpours in the warmer months. Winter can bring snowfall to the higher ridges of the Cumberland Plateau, which sometimes affects access on forest and county roads. Most developed campgrounds near Annville operate on a seasonal schedule. Trace Branch and Buckhorn campgrounds, both on Buckhorn Lake in the Redbird area and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, typically open in early May and close at the end of September. Larger Forest Service sites farther out, such as Holly Bay near Laurel River Lake, run from mid-April through the end of October. Peak booking pressure hits between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and holiday weekends fill early. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable RV weather and lighter crowds. Fall foliage in October is a strong draw, while March through May can bring heavy rain and muddy trails. Private campgrounds like Cross Mountain Campground list as open year-round, but services vary in winter.

Terrain around Annville is Appalachian foothill country: narrow ridges, forested hollows, and winding two-lane roads. RV drivers should plan routes carefully, since some forest and county roads have tight turns, low tree canopy, and steep grades that are not friendly to larger rigs. Hookup quality varies. Cross Mountain Campground offers 25 full-hookup sites on concrete pads with city water and sewer plus 30- and 50-amp electric, along with primitive sites, a bathhouse, and Wi-Fi. Federal sites on Buckhorn Lake and in the Daniel Boone National Forest are more basic, with electric or electric-and-water hookups at some loops and vault or flush toilets depending on the campground. Black bears live throughout the Daniel Boone National Forest, so proper food storage is required. Camping on the forest is generally limited to 14 consecutive days within a 30-day period, and dispersed campers should follow current district rules.
