The camping calendar in southeastern Kentucky follows a familiar rhythm. Most Forest Service and state park developed campgrounds operate from spring through late fall, while a few private parks remain open year round. Spring brings green-up, wildflowers, and cool nights; it is also one of the wettest stretches of the year, so campers should expect thunderstorms and monitor flash-flood watches, especially near creek-side sites. Summer is peak season. July is the warmest month, with average highs around 85°F and heat indices climbing into the mid-90s thanks to Appalachian humidity. Kentucky Splash operates on a summer schedule, with the waterpark open Memorial Day through Labor Day while the campground itself stays open through the shoulder seasons. Fall delivers the year's best camping weather, with color peaking in mid to late October across the Appalachian foothills. Winter camping is possible at private parks that stay open year round; at Wilderness Road Campground in Cumberland Gap, loops B, C, and D and one comfort station remain open from mid-November through mid-March, while other loops close for the winter season.

Site types range from full-hookup RV pads to primitive tent spots. Private parks in the area typically offer full-hookup RV sites with water, electricity, sewer, Wi-Fi, and bathhouses, plus a smaller number of tent sites. At Wilderness Road Campground in Cumberland Gap, 43 sites in loops B and C have 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric hookups, with hot showers and potable water in the comfort stations and a dump station near the entrance. RV travelers should note that most Forest Service and national park sites are back-in only, with only one pull-through at Wilderness Road. Loop roads are paved but sites vary in length, and some can be slanted enough that leveling blocks are essential. Cell service is spotty in the forest. Black bears are present, so food storage rules apply.
