Campgrounds and RV parks near Coal Run Village, KY

Outdoor activity centers on water and mountain trails. The Levisa Fork runs through Coal Run City Park, and paddlers can put in at the Justice Way River Access Point, which is part of the Hatfield and McCoy River Trails. Bob Amos Park in Pikeville offers hiking and views of the Pikeville Cut-Through, a large engineering project that rerouted the Levisa Fork through the mountain. At Breaks Interstate Park, hiking trails wind along a deep canyon known as the Grand Canyon of the South, with kayaking and seasonal whitewater rafting on the Russell Fork, a lake for calmer water recreation, an outdoor pool, and a zip line during operating seasons. Paintsville Lake supports fishing, boating, kayaking, jet skiing, and water skiing, with bass fishing tournaments year round and regular trout stocking, and an ADA-accessible boat launch. In town, the Appalachian Wireless Arena hosts concerts, and Hatfield and McCoy historic sites are scattered across Pike County.

The core RV season in this part of Appalachia runs from spring through mid-fall. At Breaks Interstate Park, Campgrounds A, B, and C are available seasonally from spring until fall, while Campground D and the Yurt are available year round. The seasonal campground typically operates from April 1 through October 31. Paintsville Lake State Park lists the campground as open year round, with reservations made at least one day ahead and up to twelve months in advance, and peak season runs from April 1 through October 31 with a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday nights. Late spring and early summer bring the greenest scenery and higher water for paddling on the Russell Fork and Levisa Fork. Summers are warm and humid, and winters are short, very cold, and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Fall delivers strong hardwood color across Pine Mountain and the surrounding ridges, usually peaking in mid to late October. Kentucky State Parks notes that water and other resources cannot be guaranteed at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact parks directly before an off-season trip.

Roads into the mountains are narrow and winding. The route to Breaks Interstate Park involves sharp turns, switchbacks, and steep grades, so larger rigs and trailers should plan the approach carefully and avoid shortcuts on unfamiliar county roads. Campsites at Breaks are divided into Campgrounds A, B, C, and D, with wooded and grassy loops. Most sites have electric and water hookups, and amenities include drinking water, a dump station, a general store, 30 and 50 amp hookups, a laundry facility, and a playground. Paintsville Lake offers full hookup sites and hike-in tent sites reached by a well-maintained gravel path, with clean bathhouses within walking distance of the shoreline. Bear precautions apply at Breaks: coolers, drinks, and food must be secured in an RV, vehicle, or suspended out of reach, trash goes in bear-proof waste stations, outside firewood is not permitted, and firewood is available at the campground store. Fires are only permitted in provided fire rings. Cell coverage is spotty in the deeper hollows.
