Campgrounds near Florence, Kentucky
Florence sits in Boone County in Northern Kentucky, minutes from the Ohio River and roughly fifteen miles south of downtown Cincinnati. The area works well as an RV base for travelers who want a mix of small-town Kentucky and a major metro, with Interstate 71/75 running through town and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport just north.
Campground options range from full-service private resorts to a state-park campground. Oak Creek RV Resort and Campground is an established facility in nearby Walton with roughly 100 camping spaces that accommodates RVs up to 65 feet with pull-through and back-in options. Most sites include electric and water hookups on level gravel pads without sewer connections at individual sites, and management provides pump-out services two to three times per week. Big Bone Lick State Park's campground features 62 campsites with utility hookups, grills, and a playground, with showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities at a central service building and a camp store on-site.
Boone's Landing, Beyonder Getaway at Rising Sun, and Tuckers Landing RV Park round out the nearby choices, spread along the Ohio River corridor into southeastern Indiana.
Things to do near Florence
Big Bone Lick State Historic Site is known as the Birthplace of American Vertebrate Paleontology because it was the first site in North America to have an organized excavation, conducted by William Clark in 1807. Fossilized remains of American Mastodon, Columbian Mammoth, and Giant Ground Sloths were discovered there. The park keeps a live bison herd viewable from a short trail, and hikers will find five trails totaling over four miles, including the moderate two-mile Coralberry Trail.
Families often pair camp time with day trips into Cincinnati. Attractions within a half hour include the Cincinnati Museum Center, the Cincinnati Art Museum, Newport Aquarium, Devou Park, Boone County Arboretum, and Florence Speedway. The Creation Museum in Petersburg and the Ark Encounter in Williamstown are also within an easy drive south.

Northern Kentucky has four distinct seasons. Summers are warm and humid, winters are cold with occasional snow, and skies are partly cloudy year round. Peak camping runs from late spring through early fall, when private parks are fully open and state-park amenities are fully staffed.
Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year and greens up quickly. Monthly precipitation ranges from about 132 mm in April, the wettest month, to 71 mm in August, the driest. Summer weekends draw the strongest demand, particularly around Independence Day and Labor Day, and reservations should be locked in well ahead.
Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler nights, lower humidity, and color through October. Kentucky State Parks list their campgrounds as year-round, though water service and other resources can be limited during freezing weather, so cold-season travelers should contact the park directly to confirm available hookups.

The trailer was easy enough to pull with our SUV and was a comfortable and cozy space for two adults for 3 nights. The A/C worked great and it was way better than tent camping. This was our first time renting a camping trailer and the owner’s first time lending. He was quick to respond to our questions. We would do it again. We used our own bedding and rugs to make it feel more homey for us.

How to book
Reservations for Big Bone Lick State Historic Site Campground can be made through the Kentucky State Parks reservation portal online or by phone. The site offers electric and water hookups, with full hookups available at some locations and a dump station near the entrance. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to twelve months in advance, with a maximum stay of fourteen days.
Private parks including Oak Creek RV Resort and Campground, Boone's Landing, Beyonder Getaway at Rising Sun, and Tuckers Landing RV Park take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Booking well in advance is advisable during summer months and weekends. For holiday weekends, reserve eight to twelve weeks out.
What to expect
Expect a mix of highway-adjacent RV parks and quieter state-park camping. Oak Creek RV Resort and Campground sits just off Interstate 75 in Walton, which makes it easy to reach, though some road noise can be expected due to its proximity to the highway. The Big Bone Lick campground spreads across open terrain with sites arranged in two main loops plus a smaller back section, and most sites lack natural shade, which can be an issue during hot summer days.
Hookup standards vary. Some parks offer full hookups, while others provide water and electric with a central dump station or scheduled pump-out. Bring a longer water hose, a surge protector, and enough sewer hose to reach off-site connections. Cell coverage is generally strong across Boone County, and grocery and fuel stops are plentiful along US-42 and the I-71/75 corridor.
