Camping near Harlan, Kentucky
Harlan sits in southeastern Kentucky's Appalachian coalfields, framed by Black Mountain, the state's highest peak at 4,145 feet, and the long ridgeline of Pine Mountain. The town serves as a base for RV travelers heading to the surrounding off-road trail systems, state parks, and the Cumberland Gap area on the Kentucky-Virginia-Tennessee border.
Campground options range from full-hookup RV parks tied to the trail network to primitive sites in the mountains. Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park operates at the Putney Trailhead for the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area, making it a popular pick for ATV and side-by-side crowds. Willie Begley Memorial RV Park and Marty's ATV Oasis LLC provide additional local options oriented to off-road visitors, while Rock Bottom Horse Camp caters to equestrian travelers.
For a national-park experience, Wilderness Road - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park lies south of Harlan near Middlesboro and offers developed sites within a federally managed park. Together, these campgrounds cover the main use cases: trail-side hookups, horse camping, and traditional park camping.
Things to do around Harlan
The headline activity is off-roading. Since opening in 2005, Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area has grown into a major off-road destination, with approximately 150 miles of trails across roughly 7,000 acres accommodating ATVs, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, Jeeps, and trucks. Trails are identified by number or name and given a difficulty classification, with signs at intersections and map kiosks at the trailheads. Riders must purchase a permit, sold per vehicle as a 31-day or annual pass, and helmets are required.
Kingdom Come State Park, atop Pine Mountain, is the region's hiking hub. Fourteen hiking trails, a 9-hole miniature golf course, a lake with paddle boats, picnic shelters, fishing, and primitive campsites are available, along with access to Little Shepherd Trail, a 38-mile primitive road that winds across the Pine Mountain ridgetop between Harlan and Whitesburg.
History stops include the Portal 31 Mine Tour and the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum in Benham, plus the Cumberland Gap area to the south.

December - February
45° / 27°F 110 mmCold, wet; snow and ice possible on mountain roads
Spring and fall are the strongest RV windows. Daytime highs are mild, humidity is lower than midsummer, and the hardwood forests either bloom or turn color. Fall foliage on Pine Mountain and Black Mountain typically peaks in mid-to-late October, and weekends around that window fill quickly at trail-adjacent campgrounds.
Summer is peak season for off-road riders and families. Days are warm and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The Black Mountain OHV trail system is open year-round to all vehicles, but summer weekends and holidays draw the largest crowds, so booking hookup sites well in advance is wise. Trails can be muddy after storms.
Winter is quiet. Elevations above 2,000 feet see snow and ice, and mountain roads to Kingdom Come and along Little Shepherd Trail can become slick or impassable. Some private RV parks scale back services, though primitive camping at Kingdom Come State Park remains available year-round. Travelers with four-season rigs can find open sites but should watch forecasts closely and plan for cold nights.
How to book a campsite near Harlan
Private RV parks in the Harlan area, including Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park, Willie Begley Memorial RV Park, and Marty's ATV Oasis LLC, are typically reserved directly through the campground by phone or their own websites. Peak weekends tied to ATV events and fall color fill first, so reservations several weeks out are recommended for full-hookup sites.
Wilderness Road - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park is a National Park Service campground, and all sites must be reserved and paid for through Recreation.gov. Individual sites can be booked up to 6 months in advance, and group sites up to 12 months in advance.
Kentucky State Parks handle their own arrangements for primitive camping. At Kingdom Come State Park, sites are limited and rustic: campers may register at the Gift Shop or with a Park Ranger and use the restroom facilities at the picnic shelters. Trail permits for the Black Mountain OHV system are purchased separately at the trailheads and are required in addition to camping fees.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain is genuinely mountainous. Roads into campgrounds and state parks include steep grades, tight switchbacks, and narrow shoulders. Kingdom Come State Park sits at about 2,700 feet on the crest of Pine Mountain, and the drive-in access via steep mountain roads can challenge larger RVs, so Class A and long fifth-wheel drivers should route carefully and favor the private parks along US 119.
Hookup levels vary. Trail-side RV parks generally offer 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and access to a dump station. Wilderness Road Campground has 120 sites, 41 of them with 30- or 50-amp electric, plus heated showers and a dump station. Kingdom Come sites are primitive with no electric or water at the site. Cell service is spotty in the hollows and on Pine Mountain ridgelines.
Expect an active, ATV-focused atmosphere near the Putney and Evarts trailheads. Bring insect repellent, layers for cool mountain evenings, and secure food storage: this is black bear country.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Harlan, KY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Harlan, KY?
RV rental in Harlan, KY is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Appalachian Mountains, with most travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night and Class C motorhomes typically running $175 to $275 per night. Because Harlan is a smaller market than Lexington or Louisville, you'll often find cheap RV rental Harlan options that beat city pricing by 20 to 30 percent. To save even more, book midweek stays (Sunday through Thursday) and travel in shoulder months like late April or early October when off-road tourism slows. Pro tip: many Harlan hosts include camp chairs, fire pit grates, and basic kitchen kits at no extra cost, so message before booking to confirm what's bundled in.
kentuckytourism.com/harlanDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Harlan, Kentucky?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Harlan and drive anywhere in Kentucky, with no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement required for personal-use motorhomes under 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). That covers virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, travel trailer, and fifth wheel on the RVezy platform. You'll need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identification (ID) through the booking platform, so there's nothing extra to upload at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license and you're set to explore the Cumberland Mountains.
drive.ky.gov/driver-licensing/Pages/default.aspxWhat protection comes with my Harlan RV rental?
Every RV rental in Harlan, KY booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the Black Mountain views instead of worst-case scenarios. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind. During checkout you choose from multiple renter protection plan tiers, so you control the level of coverage that fits your trip, not the host. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan at no extra cost, which is especially reassuring on the steep mountain roads around Pine Mountain and US-119.

If life happens or weather turns nasty on Pine Mountain, RVezy's support team works with you on options based on how far out your trip is and the current cancellation terms. You can review the cancellation policy details in the RVezy Help Center before booking. Pro tip: book your RV camping Harlan trip early to secure the best rigs for Poke Sallet Festival weekend or fall color season, knowing you have built-in flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Harlan?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Harlan options are plentiful on RVezy because Harlan County is dog-country at heart. Use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching to instantly see rigs that welcome your pup, then message the host to confirm any size or breed preferences. Once you've got your RV, you'll find dogs are welcome on leash at Kingdom Come State Park's hiking trails (including the trek to Raven Rock) and along the riverside paths at Harlan County Campground in Putney. Pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and bear-aware food storage habits since black bears do roam the eastern Kentucky mountains. Your dog is going to love the creek dips.
parks.ky.gov/cumberland/parks/recreation/kingdom-come-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Harlan?
Yes, RV delivery Harlan is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress of driving a big rig through the mountains. Many RVezy hosts in the Harlan area offer delivery straight to popular spots like Harlan County Campground at the Putney Trailhead, Kingdom Come State Park, or Martins Fork Lake. Your host will tow the RV in, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system from the propane stove to the awning. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see local options and delivery fees, which are usually based on mileage from the host's location. This is a game-changer if you're a first time renting an RV traveler.
harlancountytrails.com/attractions/camping/How far can I drive my Harlan RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
Plenty of Harlan hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a Kentucky RV trip that loops through the Cumberland Mountains, Daniel Boone National Forest, and over into Tennessee or Virginia. Other listings include a generous daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small per-mile fee after that, so always check the mileage policy on the listing before booking. From Harlan you're within easy range of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park (about 50 miles), Pigeon Forge and the Smokies (around 110 miles), Red River Gorge (roughly 140 miles), and Asheville, NC (about 175 miles). Map your route first, then match the mileage policy to your plan.
nps.gov/cuga/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Harlan, KY for an RV?
You've got some genuinely fantastic options for RV camping Harlan within a short drive. Harlan County Campground at the Putney Trailhead (about 8 miles north on US-119) offers 30/50-amp full hookups, showers, and direct access to Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area. Kingdom Come State Park near Cumberland has primitive sites perfect for self-contained RVs at Kentucky's highest state park (2,700 feet). Portal 31 RV Park in Lynch sits beside the historic coal mine museum with full hookups, and Willie Begley Memorial RV Park is another local favorite. For nearby variety, Carr Creek State Park (about 25 miles) offers lakeside sites with hookups and a swimming beach.
parks.ky.gov/cumberland/parks/recreation/kingdom-come-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Harlan?
Late April through October is prime time to rent an RV in Harlan, with summer highs in the low to mid-80s and comfortable nights in the 60s thanks to the mountain elevation. Spring brings dogwood and redbud blooms in April and May (highs around 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit), while October is the showstopper, when the Appalachian hardwoods erupt in red, orange, and gold and overnight lows dip into the crisp 40s. Winter Harlan RV trips are doable too, with January highs around 40 degrees Fahrenheit and occasional snow, but you'll want a four-season RV with heated tanks. Pro tip: book early for the Poke Sallet Festival in June and Black Mountain Off-Road events.
weather.gov/jkl/I've never driven an RV before. Is Harlan a good place to start?
Harlan is a wonderfully welcoming spot for first time renting an RV travelers, especially if you choose a smaller Class B campervan or compact Class C motorhome. Your RVezy host will walk you through a full orientation at pickup, covering driving tips, hookups, water systems, and the propane stove, so you're never left guessing. Even better, you can request RV delivery Harlan so the host parks and sets up the rig at your campsite, letting you focus on enjoying the trip rather than backing into a site. Stick to US-119, US-421, and KY-72 for your first drives, avoid the narrow Little Shepherd Trail until you're confident, and you'll feel like a pro by day two.
drive.ky.gov/driver-licensing/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Harlan trip?

Save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before leaving the driveway, and you'll have total peace of mind exploring the Cumberland Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Harlan, KY?
An RV road trip from Harlan opens up the entire southern Appalachian playground. Head about 50 miles southwest to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park to walk the same pass Daniel Boone used. Drive about 110 miles south to Pigeon Forge and Great Smoky Mountains National Park for waterfalls and wildlife. Run roughly 140 miles north to Red River Gorge in Daniel Boone National Forest for world-class rock formations and arch hikes. Want a longer loop? Asheville, NC is about 175 miles south for breweries and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, but other US states are generally open. Message your host before crossing state lines on extended trips.
nps.gov/grsm/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Harlan RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables, so plan smart and you'll come in under budget. Most Class C motorhomes in the Harlan area average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 9 to 14 MPG when loaded). Gas prices in Harlan County tend to track slightly below the national average, and you'll find reliable stations along US-119 in Harlan, Cumberland, and Pineville. For a 300-mile loop in a Class C at 10 MPG with $3.20 gas, budget around $96 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Harlan or Pineville before heading deep into the mountains where stations thin out.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Harlan?
For most of the year, two to four weeks ahead is plenty for the best campgrounds near Harlan, but lock in three to six months early for peak fall color (late September through late October) and major off-road weekends at Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area. Reserve Kentucky state park sites like Kingdom Come and Carr Creek through the official Kentucky State Parks reservation system at parks.ky.gov. Private parks like Harlan County Campground at Putney Trailhead take direct bookings by phone or website. Pro tip: weekday arrivals in shoulder season often mean you can roll up and snag a spot without a reservation, perfect for spontaneous trips.
parks.ky.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Harlan?
Harlan sits in mountain country, so expect winding two-lane roads, occasional steep grades, and the kind of scenery that makes you want to pull over (use designated overlooks, not the shoulder). US-119, US-421, and US-25E are the main routes and are well-maintained for RVs. The Little Shepherd Trail (KY-1679) is a 38-mile narrow ridgetop road that is gorgeous but not suitable for any RV, so leave that one for a tow vehicle or rental car. Watch for coal trucks on weekdays, fog in early mornings along the Cumberland River valley, and occasional black bear sightings near Kingdom Come State Park. Drive in daylight your first day to enjoy the views safely.
transportation.ky.gov/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities do campgrounds near Harlan offer for RVs?
Local campgrounds are well set up for RVers. Harlan County Campground at the Putney Trailhead offers 30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, a dump station, and new showers and restrooms. Portal 31 RV Park in Lynch features full-service sites with a huge parking area for big rigs. Most private parks near Harlan have on-site dump stations and potable water fills, while state parks like Kingdom Come offer primitive sites with restrooms but no individual hookups (a great option if your rental has full holding tanks). Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump before heading up to higher-elevation primitive spots so you can stay longer without breaking camp.
parks.ky.gov/cumberland/parks/recreation/kingdom-come-state-parkWhat's typically included in a Harlan motorhome rental?
Most motorhome rental Harlan listings come ready to camp, including comfortable beds (sleeps 2 to 8 depending on the RV), a full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning and furnace, plus seatbelts for travel passengers. Many Class C and Class A rigs include a generator, awning, outdoor camp chairs, and basic kitchen kits. TV and Wi-Fi vary by listing, and cell service can be spotty in the deeper Harlan County hollers, so don't count on streaming everywhere. Check the listing's amenity list and add-ons section, and message the host to confirm anything specific like a roof rack for bikes or kayaks.
rvezy.com/campgrounds/destination/united-states/kentucky/harlanWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Harlan hosts offer popular add-ons that make your trip easier, including delivery and setup (great if you don't want to drive the rig), generator use, bike or kayak racks, linen and kitchen packages, fire pits, and outdoor camping kits. Add-on fees are listed transparently on each listing before you book. For pickup, you'll meet your host at their address for a hands-on walkthrough, or arrange delivery to your campsite for an additional fee based on mileage. Mileage policies vary, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage and others including 100 to 150 miles per day. One-way trips are sometimes possible: message the host directly from the listing page to ask about popular routes like Harlan to Pigeon Forge or Harlan to Red River Gorge.
rvezy.com/campgrounds/destination/united-states/kentucky/harlanHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash to a stranger. You'll pay for your booking with a credit or debit card at checkout, and the funds are held securely until your trip is confirmed. A separate refundable security deposit is placed on your card before pickup (the amount is shown clearly on the listing) and is released back to you after your trip, assuming no damage, missing fuel, or excess mileage charges. To avoid surprises, document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and dropoff, return it with the same fuel level you received it at, and stay within your mileage allowance.
