RV camping near Loyall, Kentucky
Loyall sits in Harlan County in southeastern Kentucky, tucked into the Cumberland Mountains along the Cumberland River. The area is a working Appalachian community rather than a resort town, and RV camping here is oriented around outdoor recreation: off-road trail systems, state parks along Pine Mountain, and the Cumberland Gap area straddling Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Close to Loyall, Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park serves as a base for riders using the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area, with RV hookups, tent areas, and shower facilities on site. Willie Begley Memorial RV Park and Marty's ATV Oasis LLC provide additional options for travelers focused on ATV and side-by-side riding, while Rock Bottom Horse Camp caters to equestrian visitors.
For a more traditional national-park experience, Wilderness Road - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park lies roughly an hour southwest and offers about 150 wooded sites inside a park that spans three states and includes more than 85 miles of trails.
Things to do near Loyall
The Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area is the region's headline attraction, with over 150 miles of marked and difficulty-rated trails across approximately 7,000 acres for ATVs, 4x4s, side-by-sides, and dirt bikes. Trailheads at Putney and Evarts put riders directly into the network.
Kingdom Come State Park, on the crest of Pine Mountain, is Kentucky's highest state park and features sandstone formations like Log Rock and Raven Rock, a small stocked lake, and a network of hiking trails. The park also connects to the Little Shepherd Trail along the ridgetop.
At Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, visitors can drive to the Pinnacle Overlook, hike to White Rocks or Sand Cave, and tour the historic Hensley Settlement. The Kentucky Coal Mining Museum and Portal 31 Mine Tour in nearby Benham round out the family itinerary.

Harlan County has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and short, cold, wet winters. Late spring through early fall is the busiest window for RV travel, with peak trail use on Black Mountain during long weekends and holidays. Fall brings strong color across Pine Mountain and cooler nights that favor campfires, drawing leaf-peepers to the state park overlooks.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Wilderness Road Campground at Cumberland Gap is open year round with reduced winter services, while primitive sites at Kingdom Come State Park remain available through the colder months. Snowfall in Harlan is modest but not rare, and icy mountain roads can affect access to higher elevations.
Spring is a wet stretch of the year and thunderstorms are common, so campers using off-road parks should check trail conditions after heavy rain. Summer humidity is high and afternoon storms are typical, but mornings and evenings on the ridges tend to be comfortable.
How to book campgrounds in the area
Wilderness Road - Cumberland Gap National Historic Park is fully reservable through Recreation.gov. Individual sites can be booked up to six months in advance, and group sites up to twelve months out. Same-night bookings are allowed on Recreation.gov when sites are available, and reservations can also be made by phone at 1-877-444-6777.

For holiday weekends and major off-road events on Black Mountain, book several weeks ahead. Kingdom Come State Park primitive sites are typically registered on arrival with park staff.
What to expect on the ground
This is Appalachian coal country, and roads into the mountains are winding, narrow in places, and steep. Larger motorhomes and long trailers should plan routes carefully and use main highways like US-119 and US-25E rather than shortcuts across the ridges. Cell coverage is spotty once off the main corridors.
At private RV parks near Loyall, expect full or partial hookups, gravel or grass sites, and basic bathhouses. Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park sits at the Putney trailhead and caters directly to off-road users. Wilderness Road Campground is wooded and mostly back-in, with electric hookups on select loops and a dump station near the entrance for reservation holders.
Black bears are present around Kingdom Come State Park and in the Cumberland Gap area. Store food securely, use bear-proof containers where provided, and keep sites clean.
