Campgrounds near Manchester, Kentucky
Manchester sits in Clay County in southeastern Kentucky, tucked into the foothills of the Cumberland Plateau and surrounded by the ridges and hollows of the Daniel Boone National Forest. The town works as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the southern half of the forest, with quick access to Redbird Ranger District trails, the Redbird Crest Trail system, and the South Fork Kentucky River drainage.
Close-in options lean toward small, privately run parks. Cross Mountain Campground and Backstreet Outdoor Adventures Campground both cater to OHV riders using the surrounding trail network, while Willie Begley Memorial RV Park offers a simpler in-town stop with hookups. Westgate RV Camping sits on the west side of town along the main travel corridor, and Buffalo Camp & Ride Campground is oriented toward horseback and ATV users.
Most sites in the area offer electric and water; full hookups and dump stations vary by park. Travelers wanting national-forest campgrounds with lake access typically drive south toward Laurel River Lake or east toward London and Corbin.
Things to do near Manchester
OHV riding is the dominant draw. The Redbird Crest Trail system, a roughly 100-mile network of loops on the Redbird Ranger District of the Daniel Boone National Forest, pulls ATV, side-by-side, and dirt-bike traffic and is accessed from the Peabody, Bear Creek, and Sugar Creek trailheads off KY 66. A Daniel Boone National Forest OHV pass is required. Buffalo Camp & Ride Campground and Backstreet Outdoor Adventures Campground are set up specifically for riders bringing rigs and toy haulers.
Beyond the trails, the South Fork Kentucky River and nearby creeks offer paddling and smallmouth fishing in warmer months. Day trips reach Laurel River Lake for boating and swimming, Cumberland Falls State Resort Park for the waterfall and moonbow, and Red River Gorge farther north for hiking and climbing.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Manchester. April through early June brings wildflowers, moderate temperatures, and reliable trail conditions after the ground firms up, though thunderstorms and heavy spring rain can turn unpaved forest roads and OHV trails to mud. Book weekends around Memorial Day and Independence Day early; riding-oriented parks fill fastest.
Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon storms common. Shade and hookups matter here, since overnight lows stay mild and daytime highs sit in the mid 80s. Insect pressure peaks in July and August.
Fall, from mid-September through late October, delivers the year's best combination of cool nights, drier trails, and hardwood color across the Cumberland Plateau. Winter camping is possible but limited: many national-forest campgrounds close or reduce services from late fall into early spring, and freezing rain and occasional snow can affect ridge roads. Confirm winter operating status with each campground before arrival.
How to book near Manchester
Reservation systems split between federal and private. Reservable campgrounds inside the Daniel Boone National Forest, including sites near Laurel River Lake and Cave Run Lake, are booked through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window that opens at 10 a.m. Eastern. Reservations are strongly recommended for holiday weekends and any weekend from May through October.
Private parks around Manchester, including Cross Mountain Campground, Willie Begley Memorial RV Park, Westgate RV Camping, and Buffalo Camp & Ride Campground, book directly by phone, website, or social-media message. Availability at OHV-oriented parks tightens around major riding events and long weekends, so call ahead.
Kentucky state parks with campgrounds, such as Levi Jackson Wilderness Road and Cumberland Falls, use the state parks reservation portal. Some first-come, first-served sites still exist in parts of the national forest, but plan a backup during peak season.
What to expect around Manchester
Roads into and around Manchester are a mix of four-lane parkway, two-lane state routes, and narrow ridge roads. The Hal Rogers Parkway (KY 80) handles larger rigs comfortably, but many campgrounds sit down secondary county roads with tight turns, steep grades, and low-hanging branches. Route larger motorhomes and fifth-wheels carefully.
Hookup levels vary. Expect electric and water at most private parks; sewer and full hookups are less consistent, and cell service can drop off quickly once inside forest terrain. Verizon and AT&T generally hold up better than smaller carriers.
Wildlife includes black bear in the surrounding national forest, so use bear-aware food storage. Pack for humidity, sudden thunderstorms in summer, and cool nights in spring and fall even when afternoons feel warm.

Spring brings occasional fog and pop-up thunderstorms, while winter can deliver snow or ice 5-10 days per season.
