Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel to the McKee area. Temperatures are moderate, humidity is manageable, and the hardwood forests of the Cumberland Plateau shift through wildflowers in April and May, then peak fall color from mid to late October. Rain is common in spring, and creek fords on forest roads can rise quickly after storms.
Summer is warm and humid, with July average highs near 86°F and heat index values well into the 90s on many afternoons. This is peak season for climbing in the Gorge and for OHV parks, so booking well ahead is important, especially for holiday weekends.
Winter brings cold, wet weather and occasional snow, with measurable snowfall possible from December through March and even into October or April in cooler years. Some private campgrounds close or reduce services in the coldest months, while Wildcat Offroad Park stays open year-round for riders willing to deal with mud and cold.
How to book a campsite near McKee
Reservation systems vary by property. Private campgrounds such as Lago Linda Hideaway, Firefly Hills, Cross Mountain Campground, and Wildcat Adventures Offroad Park take direct reservations by phone, email, or third-party booking platforms rather than through federal portals. Red Hill Horse Camp requires reservations for overnight stays and is booked directly with the campground.
For Forest Service sites in the surrounding Daniel Boone National Forest, some campgrounds are reservable through Recreation.gov, which opens bookings up to six months in advance, while others remain first-come, first-served. For peak season visits, book as early as possible. Weekends in October and holiday weekends in summer fill first.
What to expect around McKee
Terrain around McKee is hilly and heavily wooded, with narrow forest roads and one-lane sections common on the way to public campgrounds. Several Forest Service sites cannot accommodate long trailers due to tight roads and limited turnouts, so RV renters should check length limits and road conditions before committing to a site.
Amenities vary sharply. Private parks such as Firefly Hills and Cross Mountain Campground typically offer full hookups and bathhouses, while many Forest Service and horse camps are primitive with vault toilets and limited or no potable water. Cell coverage is spotty in the hollows and along ridge roads, so download maps in advance. Bring bug spray in summer and layered clothing for cool nights in spring and fall.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in McKee, KY?
RV rental in McKee, KY is one of the most affordable ways to explore eastern Kentucky's Appalachian foothills. On RVezy, travel trailers typically range from $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes run about $150 to $250 per night, and luxury Class A rigs land between $200 and $375 per night. Because Jackson County is a smaller market, you'll often find better daily rates here than in Lexington or Louisville. To save even more, book Sunday through Thursday, aim for shoulder seasons in late April or early October when fall colors peak, and filter for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: a cheap RV rental in McKee paired with a free first-come, first-served site at S-Tree Campground can keep your whole weekend under $300.
visitjacksoncountyky.org/campingWhat license do I need to rent an RV in McKee, Kentucky?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in McKee, Kentucky. Kentucky does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs you might take down US 421 toward Daniel Boone National Forest. You'll need to be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and ID verification happens quickly inside the platform when you reserve. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-timers are surprised how straightforward the paperwork is, leaving you free to focus on the fun stuff like mapping Sheltowee Trace trailheads.

Booking an RV rental in McKee is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy on every reservation, not individual hosts. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you in full or offers travel credits so your trip can be rebooked. Severe weather sometimes affects eastern Kentucky in spring and winter, so if conditions look unsafe, contact RVezy support to discuss your options.

fs.usda.gov/dbnfCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in McKee?

Delivery fees usually scale with distance, so message your host with the campsite address for an exact quote. Pro tip: book a host who offers delivery and setup so your first night is stress-free.

You're covered: 24/7 roadside assistance is included in every RVezy booking, so help is one call away whether you're parked at McKee Campground in town or pulled off Forest Road 4 heading to Turkey Foot. Roadside handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Your host is also a direct text away to walk you through small fixes like resetting the GFCI or relighting the water heater. Cell service is solid right around McKee but can get patchy deep in Daniel Boone National Forest, so screenshot your roadside contact info and your host's number before heading into the trees. Pro tip: the nearest 24-hour services and fuel are in McKee itself, with bigger repair shops in Berea about 25 miles north.
fs.usda.gov/r08/danielboone/recreation/central-forestWhat are the best RV road trip routes from McKee?

Continue southeast to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park on the Tennessee/Virginia border (about 110 miles). For a longer trip, point west to Mammoth Cave (175 miles) or south to the Great Smoky Mountains (about 175 miles). nps.gov/maca/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a McKee RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier line items to plan for a motorhome rental in McKee since Kentucky gas prices typically run below the national average, often $2.80 to $3.30 per gallon at the Marathon and BP stations right in town. Expect roughly 8-10 MPG for a Class A, 10-14 MPG for a Class C, and 16-22 MPG for a campervan or truck camper. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop hitting Red River Gorge and back, plan on $60-$90 in fuel for a Class C. Travel trailers add a few MPG hit to your tow vehicle. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near McKee?
Jackson County is wonderfully uncrowded compared to most national-forest gateways, so booking is forgiving. For Daniel Boone National Forest sites like Turkey Foot and S-Tree, no reservations are needed since they're first-come, first-served and free; just arrive by Friday morning for summer weekends. For developed sites at Carter Caves State Resort Park or Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park, use the Kentucky State Parks reservation system up to 12 months in advance, and lock in fall-color weekends in October by mid-summer. Privately run McKee Campground in town takes direct reservations by phone at (606) 493-8852. Pro tip: weekdays anytime from May through September are easy walk-ups, perfect for a spontaneous RV trip.
parks.ky.gov/What are driving conditions like around McKee for a larger RV?
Driving an RV in McKee is manageable and rewarding once you know the terrain. The main routes (US 421 and KY-89) are paved two-lane roads with rolling hills, gentle curves, and occasional steep grades typical of the Appalachian foothills. There are no major low-clearance bridges in town. Where you want to be careful: narrow gravel Forest Service roads like FR-4 and FR-345 toward Turkey Foot Campground include a steep descent and a creek ford that can flood after heavy rain, so a smaller Class B or C is a much better fit than a 35-foot Class A. Summer thunderstorms can come in fast. Pro tip: download offline maps before leaving McKee because GPS signal can drop inside Daniel Boone National Forest.
