Campgrounds and RV parks near Mount Sterling, KY

The main draw south of town is the Red River Gorge and adjacent Natural Bridge State Resort Park, a forested park surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest and adjacent to the Red River Gorge National Geologic Area. Miles of hiking trails lead to sandstone arches, and a sky lift offers a non-hiking route to the top of the natural bridge. At Fort Boonesborough, families can tour a reconstructed frontier fort with resident artisans, visit the Kentucky River Museum, swim in the pool complex, fish the Kentucky River, and play mini-golf. Blue Licks Battlefield adds a pioneer museum, short interpretive trails, and a nature preserve protecting the rare Short's goldenrod. Mount Sterling itself has grocery stores, fuel, and restaurants for restocking between park visits.

The region has a humid subtropical climate with warm, muggy summers and cold, wet winters. Late spring through early fall is the primary camping window. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in April and early May, and fall color across the Gorge typically runs mid-October to early November, which is the busiest weekend period at Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge campgrounds. State-park campgrounds operate on distinct seasons. Blue Licks Battlefield accepts reservations into mid-November, and water hookups are not available from late October through mid-March due to seasonal winterization. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly for available resources during those months. Summer thunderstorms are common and low-lying sites can get soggy after heavy rain. Due to flood damage, the Fort Boonesborough campground is closed through the end of December, with reopening not expected until spring, so verify status before booking that park.

Expect a mix of paved and gravel back-in sites shaded by hardwoods. State-park loops tend to be tighter than private RV parks, and hookup pedestals are sometimes on the driver's side, so bring a 50-foot power cord and an extra water hose. Fort Boonesborough offers 166 sites with electricity and water hookups, 18 with full hookups, two central service buildings, and three dump stations with showers, restrooms, and laundry. Blue Licks features 55 total sites, with 49 standard electric-and-water sites on 30-amp service plus 6 primitive tent-only sites, all back-in with maximum equipment lengths from 32 to 54 feet. Kentucky campground sites can be occupied by a maximum of 8 people, with four adults and children 16 and under included in the base rate. Pets are welcome on leash.
