Campgrounds and RV parks near Murray, KY

Kentucky Lake is the main draw. Crappie and bass fishing on the Blood River inlet near Wildcat Creek Recreation Area is among the best in the region, and most nearby campgrounds have a boat ramp, courtesy dock, or beach for swimming and paddling. Jonathan Creek Campground and Lakeside Campground and Marina both sit on productive fishing water with easy lake access. On land, Land Between the Lakes offers the Elk and Bison Prairie, the Woodlands Nature Station, the Homeplace 1850s Working Farm, and the Golden Pond Planetarium, along with a long north-south trail for hiking and mountain biking. In town, Murray State University hosts sporting events, the historic downtown square has restaurants and shops, and grocery and RV-supply runs are straightforward before heading back to the campground.

The core camping season in the Murray area runs March through October, matching the operating windows of most private and public campgrounds around Kentucky Lake. Wildcat Creek Recreation Area, for example, operates March 1 through October 31, and the Forest Service campgrounds at Land Between the Lakes are generally open March through November. Spring is prime crappie season and brings steady rain, so expect wet sites and cool nights through April. Summer is peak season: warm lake water, long days, and busy weekends at the state park and Forest Service campgrounds, when waterfront sites book out well ahead. Humidity is high and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Fall cools quickly through October and delivers some of the most comfortable RV weather of the year, with lower humidity and hardwood color across Land Between the Lakes. In winter, many private lakeside parks close, water at campsites may be shut off due to freezing temperatures, and Kentucky State Parks warn that water and other resources are not guaranteed when temperatures drop below freezing.

Most lakeside parks near Murray offer water and 30-amp electric, with 50-amp available at the larger resort-style campgrounds and at the nearby Kentucky State Parks campground on Kentucky Lake, which provides 20, 30, and 50-amp service. Sites are typically shaded under hardwoods, with picnic tables, fire rings, and access to bathhouses, dump stations, and coin laundry. Some state park sites share electrical hookups with the adjacent site, which is worth checking when choosing a site number. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Murray but can drop inside Land Between the Lakes, especially in interior loops and backcountry areas. Kentucky prohibits importing firewood from out of state to slow the spread of emerald ash borer, so plan to buy firewood locally at the campground or a nearby store. Pets are welcome at most parks on a leash, and quiet hours are enforced at state park campgrounds.
