The camping season in the Oakbrook area is shaped by the Kentucky State Parks calendar and by the Ohio Valley's humid subtropical climate. Big Bone Lick's campground operates seasonally from April through October, with full hookups available for RVs. Private parks generally open earlier and close later, and Beyonder Getaway at Rising Sun operates year-round, with peak activities from May through October. Late spring and early summer bring warm days, frequent thunderstorms, and the region's wettest months. Most sites at Big Bone Lick lack natural shade, which several campers note becomes an issue during hot summer days, so afternoon heat can be a factor for families with kids and pets. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill first. Fall is the most comfortable window, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable foliage color along the Ohio River bluffs. Winter camping in the area is limited to private parks with year-round hookups, and freezing overnight lows are routine from December through February.
