Camping near Pikeville, Kentucky
Pikeville sits in the Appalachian coalfields of eastern Kentucky, surrounded by steep ridges, the Russell Fork river, and a growing network of off-highway trail systems. RV travelers use the city as a base for exploring the Pine Mountain corridor and the Virginia-Kentucky border country, with most campgrounds located within an hour's drive on winding two-lane routes.
The closest full-service option is Breaks Interstate Park, a 4,500-acre bi-state park straddling Kentucky and Virginia with trails, rock climbing, and canyon overlooks. Additional options include Hatfield's Hideout, Trails 2 Paradise, and Coal Camp Lodging, all catering to riders using the Hatfield-McCoy and Spearhead trail networks. Farther east across the state line, Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park sits at the trailhead for the Spearhead Trails Coal Canyon ATV, OHV, and mountain bike trail and offers cabins, full hook-up pull-through RV sites, and tent camping.
Expect mountain driving. Grades, switchbacks, and narrow shoulders are common on approach roads, and larger rigs should plan routes carefully.
Things to do around Pikeville
Outdoor recreation drives most trips. Breaks Interstate Park has miles of hiking trails, horseback riding through a park stable, and panoramic overlooks along the Russell Fork canyon. The park also runs the Splash in the Park waterpark from Memorial Day to Labor Day, plus seasonal boat, canoe, and pedal boat rentals on Laurel Lake, which makes it a strong pick for families.
Off-road riders come for the trail systems. The Spearhead Trails Coal Canyon system descends into wooded hollows where elk, deer, and other wildlife can be spotted, connects to the ATV-friendly town of Grundy, and intersects the Ridgeview Trail System for a combined 200 miles of riding across 7,900 acres. In town, Pikeville itself offers restaurants, the Hatfield-McCoy feud driving tour, and Bob Amos Park for shorter walks and playgrounds.

The camping season in this part of Appalachia is defined by the state park calendar. The main Breaks Interstate Park campground loops are open from April 1 through October 31, with a smaller loop and a yurt available year-round for off-season stays. Private RV parks such as Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure operate on longer schedules, with year-round availability at some properties.
Summer brings warm, humid days and the region's heaviest rainfall, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. July is the wettest month and the peak of family travel, so weekend sites at the popular parks fill early. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable stretches for hiking and riding.
October is the marquee month. Appalachian foliage colors the canyon walls, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers runs four weekends of dam releases on the Russell Fork for Class IV to V whitewater, and hiking temperatures are comfortable. Campsites and lodge rooms for October weekends should be booked well in advance. Winters are cold and wet, with occasional snow closing higher trails.
How to book a campground near Pikeville
Reservation systems vary by operator. Breaks Interstate Park takes reservations directly through the park's website rather than through the Virginia or Kentucky state park systems, with a booking window that opens up to eleven months ahead. Site categories include primitive tent sites, water and electric sites, and full hookup sites with sewer, spread across Campgrounds A, B, C, and D.
Private properties near Pikeville, including Hatfield's Hideout, Trails 2 Paradise, Coal Camp Lodging, and Southern Gap Outdoor Adventure RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or third-party listing platforms. Guests arriving after hours without a reservation at Breaks may contact the ranger on call using the phone number posted on the front of the campground store. Confirm cancellation terms at time of booking.
What to expect on the ground
This is mountain camping. Elevations at Breaks Interstate Park drop from ridge-top overlooks into the Russell Fork gorge, and cell service can be spotty in the hollows. Because of the terrain, larger vehicles should be ready for sharp turns, switchbacks, and steep grades on the approach roads. The park caps RVs at 62 feet and trailers at 45 feet.
Bears are active in the area. Coolers, food, and drinks must be secured inside an RV or vehicle, trash goes to bear-proof waste stations, and outside firewood is not permitted, with firewood sold at the campground store. Bring layers for cool mountain nights, insect protection for summer, and expect gravel or paved pads with a mix of shaded and open sites.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Pikeville, KY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Pikeville, KY?
RV rental in Pikeville is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Appalachian Mountains, with motorhomes averaging around $200 per night and towable trailers closer to $120 per night. Most hosts offer 10-20% discounts on weekly and monthly bookings, so a 5-night Hatfield McCoy adventure can come in well under what hotels plus a rental car would cost. For a cheap RV rental Pikeville travelers love, filter by travel trailer and pickup midweek when host calendars open up. Pro tip: shoulder months like April and October bring lower nightly rates and the bonus of cooler hiking weather along Bob Amos Park trails.
visitpikeville.com/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Pikeville, Kentucky?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pikeville for nearly every rig on the platform. Kentucky does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes and travel trailers under 26,000 pounds, which covers the vast majority of Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers listed here. You'll need to be 25 or older and complete a quick ID verification through RVezy when you book. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license and you're set to roll out toward the Hatfield McCoy Trails.
drive.ky.gov/driver-licensing/Pages/default.aspxWhat kind of protection comes with my Pikeville RV rental?
Every RV rental in Pikeville, KY booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan with 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive the winding mountain roads to Breaks Interstate Park with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), so you decide how much extra cushion you want for your Pikeville RV trip through Pine Mountain country. Coverage details, including what damages are covered and the deductible for your chosen plan, are shown clearly during booking, so a flat tire or fender bump on a narrow holler road doesn't have to end the adventure.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform (not individual hosts), so the terms are consistent no matter which rig you choose for Hillbilly Days or the Russell Fork whitewater release weekends. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and the full policy is available in the RVezy Help Center and during checkout. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or issues a refund. Our support team is one click away if anything changes before your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Pikeville?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Pikeville options, and you can filter listings by Pet-Friendly to see them instantly. Pike County is a dream for dog owners: Bob Amos Park has the 4.7-mile Real McCoy Trail loop where leashed pups love the overlook views, and Breaks Interstate Park welcomes leashed dogs on all 25-plus miles of trails and at every campsite. Hatfield's Hideout in nearby McCarr is also a pet-friendly favorite right on the Tug River. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size or breed notes, then pack a tie-out leash because Appalachian wildlife (especially turkey and deer) loves to wander through camp.
parks.ky.gov/explore/breaks-interstate-park-7829Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Pikeville?
Yes, RV delivery in Pikeville is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drop the rig at Pikeville City RV Park on Bob Amos Drive, at Breaks Interstate Park, or at a private cabin or family driveway in Pike County. They'll level it, hook up water and 30/50-amp power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Just filter by Delivery on the search page and message the host with your campsite address. Pro tip: delivery is a smart move for first-time renters because you skip the mountain driving and start your trip relaxed.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pikeville%2C%20KentuckyHow far can I drive on a Pikeville RV trip?
You can cover serious ground from Pikeville, and many hosts include generous daily mileage with options to add unlimited miles for longer adventures. Popular destinations within easy reach include Breaks Interstate Park (about 25 miles east), Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg (about 35 miles north), Cumberland Gap National Historical Park (around 145 miles southwest), Red River Gorge (about 175 miles west), and Great Smoky Mountains National Park (roughly 235 miles south). Each listing clearly shows the daily mileage allowance and the per-mile rate beyond it. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Pikeville that loops through Tennessee or West Virginia, ask the host about an unlimited-mileage add-on before booking.
parks.ky.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Pikeville, KY?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Pikeville. Pikeville RV Park at 380 Bob Amos Drive sits right in town with 30/50-amp full hookups, free Wi-Fi, and cable, just minutes from downtown restaurants. Breaks Interstate Park, about 25 miles east, offers 138 sites with full and partial hookups overlooking the Grand Canyon of the South. Elkhorn Creek Riders Retreat is the go-to for ATV lovers heading to the Hatfield McCoy Trails. Hatfield's Hideout in McCarr is a riverfront pet-friendly favorite, and Coal Camp Lodging in Shelbiana caters to UTV adventurers. Pro tip: book Breaks Interstate Park up to 11 months in advance for fall foliage weekends, they go fast.
parks.ky.gov/explore/breaks-interstate-park-7829When is the best time of year to plan an RV trip from Pikeville?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for an RV road trip from Pikeville, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-60s in spring and fall to the mid-80s in summer. June and July are the warmest months (average highs near 84-87°F) and bring the most thunderstorms, so pack rain gear. Locals will tell you the real sweet spot is late September through mid-October, when the Appalachian hills explode with red and gold foliage and overnight lows drop into the comfortable 50s. The Breaks Interstate Park campground operates April 1 through October 31, which is a good guide for the peak season window.
weather.gov/jkl/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay on Pikeville's mountain roads?
You've got this, and you won't be on your own. Every host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, and the propane and water systems, so first-time RV renters in Pikeville leave feeling confident. For the easiest first-timer experience, choose a Class B campervan or a Class C motorhome under 25 feet, both handle Pike County's curves and the famous Pikeville Cut-Through with ease. Stick to US-23 and KY-80 for the main routes, take it slow on the switchbacks heading up to Breaks Interstate Park, and use lower gears descending. Pro tip: ask your host to demo backing up at pickup, it pays off the first time you reach a campsite.
transportation.ky.gov/Pages/default.aspxWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RV rental in Pikeville KY booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a dead battery on a remote stretch of KY-80 or a flat near the Hatfield McCoy Trails is just a phone call away from help. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app for quick troubleshooting (they know their rig best), and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number to your phone before driving out of cell range in the hollers.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV across state lines from Pikeville?
Yes, and you'll want to, because Pikeville sits at the doorstep of three states. The Virginia line is just east at Breaks Interstate Park, West Virginia is a short drive north toward the Hatfield McCoy ATV Trails, and Tennessee is roughly two hours south. Cross-border travel between the US and Canada is generally allowed on RVezy rentals, but message the host before booking long routes so they can confirm insurance and mileage. Travel into Mexico is not permitted because RVezy protection coverage doesn't extend there. Popular cross-state loops include Pikeville to Gatlinburg, TN (about 235 miles) and Pikeville to Asheville, NC (about 250 miles).
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Pikeville RV trip?
Fuel is one of the bigger trip-budget items, so here's the honest math: Kentucky gas prices have generally ranged from about $2.80 to $3.50 per gallon in recent months, and most Class C motorhomes get 8-10 MPG while Class B campervans get 15-20 MPG. A 300-mile round trip from Pikeville to Red River Gorge in a Class C will run roughly $85-$115 in fuel. Save money by sticking close to home: bucket-list spots like Breaks Interstate Park, Jenny Wiley State Resort, and the Hatfield McCoy Historic Sites are all within an hour of downtown Pikeville. Pro tip: fuel up in town along the US-23/US-460 corridor where prices tend to beat the smaller mountain stations.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=KYHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Pikeville?
Book your campsite as soon as your RV is reserved, especially for Breaks Interstate Park, which opens reservations 11 months ahead and fills October fall-foliage weekends quickly. Pikeville RV Park (city-operated, 380 Bob Amos Drive) takes online bookings directly through the City of Pikeville website and is convenient for downtown events. For the Hatfield McCoy Trails area, Elkhorn Creek Riders Retreat and Rock House RV Park sell out during major ATV weekends. Pro tip: if you're coming for Hillbilly Days (third weekend of April) or the Russell Fork whitewater dam release weekends in October, lock in both your RV and campsite at least 4-6 months in advance.
parks.ky.gov/explore/breaks-interstate-park-7829What are Pikeville's driving conditions actually like?
Pikeville driving is mountain driving, but it's very doable in an RV with a little awareness. The famous Pikeville Cut-Through (a four-lane bypass through the mountain on US-23/US-460) makes getting in and out of town smooth, even for larger rigs. Heading east toward Breaks Interstate Park, KY-80 has sharp switchbacks and steep grades, so use lower gears descending and take your time. Watch for coal trucks on US-23, fog in the hollers on early mornings, and occasional wildlife (deer especially). Winter brings ice and occasional snow from December through February. Pro tip: avoid narrow secondary roads like KY-194 if you're in anything bigger than a Class C, the GPS shortcut isn't worth it.
transportation.ky.gov/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds around Pikeville?
Pikeville-area campgrounds are surprisingly well equipped. Pikeville RV Park offers 30/50-amp full hookups, free Wi-Fi, cable, and continuous sewer connections right in town. Breaks Interstate Park has 138 sites with a mix of full and partial hookups, a dump station, a camp store, laundry facilities, hot showers, and even an Olympic-sized swimming pool and the Splash in the Park waterpark. Most Pike County campgrounds have potable water fill stations and dump stations available to registered campers (and sometimes day-use for a small fee). Pro tip: black bears do roam this region, so use the bear-proof waste stations at Breaks and never leave food or coolers outside your RV overnight.
parks.ky.gov/explore/breaks-interstate-park-7829What's typically included inside a Pikeville RV rental?
You'll be impressed by what comes standard on a motorhome rental Pikeville hosts offer. Most RVs include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, sleeping for 2-8 depending on the rig, climate control with both AC and a furnace (handy for cool Appalachian nights), and a generator or shore power capability. Many also include outdoor camp chairs, a TV, and Bluetooth audio. Wi-Fi is often available but cell signal can dip in remote spots like the Breaks canyon, so download maps and entertainment ahead of time. Pro tip: check the listing's seatbelt count if you're traveling with kids, since Kentucky requires every passenger to be belted while the RV is moving.
drive.ky.gov/What add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Pikeville?
Pikeville hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor grills, generators, bike racks, kayak racks (a must for the Russell Fork or Levisa Fork), and pet cleaning fees if you're bringing the dog. Mileage policies vary by listing but most include 100-150 free miles per day with reasonable per-mile rates beyond. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in Pike County, but delivery to Pikeville RV Park, Breaks Interstate Park, or a private address is widely offered. Pro tip: bundle the linens add-on with delivery if you're flying into Pikeville-Pike County Regional Airport, you'll skip a lot of packing.
visitpikeville.com/How does payment and the security deposit work for a Pikeville RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform when you book, never directly to the host in cash. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup (the amount is shown clearly on the listing) and is released after the trip, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any issues, take time-stamped photos and a short video of the RV at pickup and drop-off, return it with the same fuel and tank levels noted at pickup, and review the host's mileage and cleaning policies during checkout. Pro tip: empty your black and gray tanks at a local dump station before drop-off to avoid a dumping fee.
