Rock Bottom Horse Camp caters to equestrian RVers, and Marty's ATV Oasis LLC serves off-road users. Mountain Pass Campground offers a more general RV setup.
For a public-land option, Wilderness Road Campground sits inside Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in the Appalachian Mountains, where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia meet, protecting 24,000 acres. It is roughly a 45-minute drive south from South Wallins via US-119 and US-25E.
Things to do near South Wallins

The Harlan County area has four distinct seasons with a wet, humid-continental pattern. The climate is humid continental with hot, humid summers and cold winters, with an average July temperature around 78°F and an average January temperature around 32°F. Rain is spread across the year, with spring and mid-summer the wettest stretches and thunderstorms common.
Late spring through October is prime RV season. Wildflowers and cool nights make April and May pleasant for hiking, though creek levels can run high. Summer brings the heaviest ATV traffic at Black Mountain and the busiest weekends at private campgrounds. Fall color typically peaks in mid to late October along Pine Mountain and inside Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
Winter is quieter but still usable. Wilderness Road Campground is open year round, and the Black Mountain trail system receives an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 visitors each year, managed by the Harlan County Outdoor Recreation Board Authority. Expect occasional snow, ice on switchbacks, and reduced services at primitive sites.
How to book campgrounds in the area
Reservation systems differ by property. All Wilderness Road Campground campsites are reserved through Recreation.gov, with individual sites bookable as early as six months in advance and group camping sites up to 12 months in advance. To book a campsite, go to Recreation.gov and search for Cumberland Gap National Historical Park or Wilderness Road Campground, or call 1-877-444-6777.
Private campgrounds such as Harlan County Campgrounty- RV Park, Marty's ATV Oasis LLC, Mountain Pass Campground, and Rock Bottom Horse Camp handle their own reservations directly by phone or website. Book well ahead for holiday weekends, ATV rally dates, and October leaf-peeping. Off-road riders should also plan for Black Mountain trail permits. HCORBA requires all visitors to register their vehicle at a trailhead and purchase a vehicle permit, sold in terms of 31 days or one year.
What to expect on the ground
Roads in and out of South Wallins are mountain roads. Grades are steep, curves are tight, and cell coverage drops in the hollows. Larger Class A rigs and long travel trailers should study routes in advance and favor US-119 and US-25E over back-road shortcuts. The road up to Kingdom Come State Park from Cumberland is steep, so plan tow-vehicle capacity accordingly.
Sites vary widely. Wilderness Road Campground contains 154 sites, including 41 sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp electricity in Loops B and C, while Loops A, D, E, F, and G have no hookups, and most sites are wooded with partial to full shade. Private ATV-oriented parks tend to offer full hookups, wash stations, and easy trail access. Black bears inhabit Kingdom Come State Park and adjoining lands in the Cumberland area, so store food and trash securely.
