Campgrounds and RV parks near Sturgis, KY

Water recreation dominates the area. Moffit Lake is stocked with catfish, bass, redear, bluegill, and crappie, and boats of any size with an electric motor can launch from handicap-accessible ramps and a dock. Pedal boats and kayaks are available for rent on site, and the recreation area sits within 20 miles of over 20,000 acres of public wildlife management areas that offer hunting, hiking, and horseback riding. For a day trip, Cave-in-rock State Park is reached by the free Cave-in-Rock ferry across the Ohio River. The park centers on a 55-foot-wide cave in the limestone bluffs above the river, with hiking trails around the cave and views of passing barges. Families staying longer often drive to Venture River RV Park, which sits on the grounds of a water park, or head to Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake for boating and swimming.

The prime RV window runs from mid-April through October, when daytime temperatures are comfortable and lake fishing is at its most productive. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in April, and fall color across the hardwood ridges typically lands in late October and early November. Summer is the peak booking season. July and August are hot and humid, with heat indices that can climb well above the actual air temperature. Weekend sites at family-focused parks like Venture River RV Park book weeks out around the Fourth of July and through school-vacation windows. The Kentucky Bike Rally, held on the third weekend of July at the Union County Fairgrounds in Sturgis, tightens availability across every campground within a 30-mile radius, so reserve early if a trip overlaps. Winter is quiet. Freezing nights are common from December through February, some private parks reduce services or close entirely, and county-run sites at Moffit Lake see mostly seasonal long-term campers rather than short-stay traffic.

Expect small-town scale. Sturgis itself has limited RV-specific services, so plan grocery and propane runs in Morganfield, about 11 miles north, or in Henderson. Cell coverage is generally reliable along US-60 and thinner inside wildlife management areas and parts of southern Illinois across the river. At Moffit Lake, sites vary in levelness, so bring blocks. A newer camp office houses a stocked camp store, laundry, and showers, and the county added additional campsites in recent seasons. At Cave-in-rock State Park, camping on the north side of the park includes 34 Class A electric sites, which can accommodate units up to 60 feet, and 25 Class B/S tent sites, with showers, restrooms, and dumping stations available in both camping areas. Ticks are common in tall grass, so pack repellent, and check trail conditions after heavy spring rain.
