Campgrounds and RV parks near Wickliffe, KY

History drives much of the local sightseeing. Columbus Belmont State Park is a 156-acre recreation park and historic site on the National Register of Historic Places and on the Kentucky Civil War Heritage Trail. On-site amenities include a 2.5-mile hiking trail through the Civil War earthworks, rifle pits and the surrounding woods and nature area, plus an 18-hole mini golf course and a gift shop featuring Civil War and Kentucky items. River watching, fishing, and picnicking are the main outdoor draws along the Mississippi and Ohio. Fort Massac State Park adds a reconstructed frontier fort and interpretive programs across the river in Illinois, and hosts the Fort Massac Encampment festival each October. Families basing at Fern Lake Campground or Hinton RV Park can day-trip to Paducah for the National Quilt Museum, riverfront murals, and grocery runs before heading back to the campsite.

Western Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate with four clear seasons. Summers are hot and humid, winters are cold with occasional snowfall, and rainfall is spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though heavy downpours and afternoon thunderstorms are common during the warmer months. Spring is the wettest stretch and can bring severe thunderstorms and river flooding along the Ohio and Mississippi. Kentucky State Parks operate on a year-round basis, but seasonal utilities matter for RV planning. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee the availability of water or other resources at their campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible. Travelers arriving in late fall through early spring should call ahead to confirm hookups. Peak demand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, with a second bump during fall color in October. Museums and snack bars at Columbus Belmont run on a shortened shoulder-season schedule: the museum is open daily from May through September and on weekends in April and October. Fort Massac shifts to first-come, first-served in the off-season.

Expect a mix of public historic parks and small private campgrounds rather than large resort-style destinations. Sites tend to be shaded, on modest grades, and sized for standard travel trailers and Class C motorhomes, though Columbus Belmont can accommodate longer rigs and Fort Massac lists a max length of 65 feet on back-in sites. Riverfront campgrounds can be humid and buggy in mid-summer, so screens and repellent are worth packing. Two Kentucky State Park rules apply at Columbus Belmont. The parks prohibit the importation of firewood by campers from any state outside of Kentucky, to help prevent the introduction of the Emerald Ash Borer, and firewood is available for sale in the state park campgrounds. Max units per site is two and may include one camper unit plus one tent; if no camper unit, then two tents is the max allowed. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town and spotty along the river bluffs.
