Campgrounds and RV parks near Boyce, LA

The surrounding national forest is the main draw. The Kincaid Lake Recreation Area, reached from the Calcasieu Ranger District office on Highway 28, sits on a 2,600-acre reservoir with boat ramps and a day-use swim beach and pavilion that reopened for the season around Mother's Day weekend and runs through Labor Day. Note that the Kincaid Lake campgrounds themselves have been closed for reconstruction following hurricane damage, so travelers should confirm status with the ranger district before planning an overnight stay there. The Wild Azalea National Recreation Trail, at 26 miles the longest hiking trail in Louisiana, runs through the district for hikers and mountain bikers. Lake and pond fishing is popular throughout Kisatchie, and paddlers can put in on Kincaid Lake or nearby waterways. Louisiana Mudfest Recreational Park hosts off-road events, and downtown Alexandria offers restaurants, museums, and the Alexandria Zoological Park within a short drive.

Central Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, and reservations at popular sites fill fastest for those windows. Spring brings wildflowers and azalea blooms along the Wild Azalea Trail. It is also the most volatile stretch for weather: the area receives plentiful rainfall year-round, with thunderstorms possible in any month, and some spring storms can be severe, producing hail, damaging wind, and occasional tornadoes. Summer is prime lake season, with the Kincaid swim beach and pavilion open through Labor Day, but heat indices routinely climb into the triple digits and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Atlantic hurricane season peaks from August into October, and while Boyce is well inland, remnants of Gulf storms have caused significant damage in the Kisatchie area in recent years, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories. Winter is generally mild with occasional freezes, and RVing is workable with basic freeze precautions.

Expect piney woods, red-clay roads, and bayous rather than dramatic elevation. Paved highways reach the main recreation areas, but forest roads to primitive sites can be narrow and rutted after rain. Larger Class A rigs should stick to developed loops and confirm site length before booking. Hookups vary widely. Private parks around Boyce generally offer 30 and 50-amp service with water and sewer, while national forest campgrounds tend toward electric-and-water or no hookups. At primitive sites within Kisatchie, potable water and restrooms are often not available, so RVers should arrive with fresh tanks filled. Bugs, humidity, and heat are the main comfort issues from late spring through early fall. Bring repellent, plan for afternoon thunderstorms, and watch for burn bans, which are common during dry summer and fall stretches.
