Campgrounds and RV parks near New Chapel Hill, TX

Water activity drives most trips. Lake Tyler and Lake Tyler East offer bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish fishing, plus boat ramps and public parks around the shoreline. The Boulders at Lake Tyler has a boardwalk, fishing barge, and on-site tackle. At Tyler State Park, families can swim in the lake, rent canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, or johnboats from the park store, and ride more than 13 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails through the Pineywoods. The Whispering Pines Nature Trail was laid out by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Junior Ranger activity journals and ranger-led programs run out of park headquarters. In Tyler itself, the Discovery Science Place, the Texas State Railroad, and zip line courses give kids and teens easy day-trip options. The Azalea Trail runs in March and the Texas Rose Festival in October.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the New Chapel Hill area. Daytime highs sit in the seventies and eighties, evenings are cool, and pine and hardwood shade makes campsites usable through the day. March brings the Azalea Trail in nearby Tyler and typically strong wildflower blooms; May is the wettest month on average, so watch the forecast for thunderstorms. Summer is hot and humid, with July and August highs regularly in the mid-nineties. The lakes stay open for swimming and paddling, but shaded, full-hookup sites with working air conditioning are worth the extra planning. Weekend and holiday demand at Tyler State Park is heavy from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Winters are short and mild but not always predictable. Overnight lows can drop below freezing, and prescribed burns at Tyler State Park are planned between December and April, which can temporarily close some camping areas, trails, or day-use spots.

Sites in this area sit in mixed pine and hardwood forest, so campsites are shaded but often uneven. RV campers at Tyler State Park are required to bring and use jack pads, and some Lakeview sites need side-to-side leveling. Roads through parts of the state park are narrow, and back-in maneuvering can be tight for larger rigs. State park campsites include a picnic table and fire ring or grill. Comfort stations with restrooms and showers, plus a dump station, serve the campground loops. Firewood is sold on site. Wildlife is active. Raccoons are notably persistent around food at Tyler State Park, so store food and trash securely. Pets are allowed on a six-foot leash but not inside park buildings.
