Camping near Austin
Austin sits at the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country, and campgrounds within a short drive of downtown range from full-service RV resorts to a state park inside the city limits. McKinney Falls State Park lies within Austin's city limits, about 13 miles from the state capitol, and puts campers on Onion Creek with limestone falls, wooded sites, and hookups, while private parks like Austin Lone Star RV Resort, Oak Forest RV Park, and Austin East KOA Holiday cluster along the I-35 and Highway 71 corridors for easy access to the city.
Most RV travelers base their trips around music, food, and Hill Country day trips rather than remote wilderness. Parks close to the airport and east side, including Awkward Turtle RV Austin and Austin East KOA Holiday, favor short commutes into town. Oak Forest RV Park and Austin Lone Star RV Resort suit travelers who want longer stays with full utilities.
Expect a mix of shaded and open sites, Central Texas heat in summer, and a busy reservation calendar around SXSW, ACL, F1, and UT football weekends.
Things to do in Austin
Mckinney Falls State Park is the outdoor anchor: campers can hike, mountain or road bike, geocache, go bouldering, picnic, and fish and swim in Onion Creek. The Upper and Lower Falls sit a short walk from the main day-use area, and rangers lead programs on birding, geocaching, atlatls and more, plus a Junior Ranger activity journal for kids.
From any of the Austin RV parks, downtown is a quick drive for live music on Red River, food trailers, the Texas State Capitol, and Lady Bird Lake paddling. Family stops include the Thinkery children's museum, Zilker Park, and Barton Springs Pool. Day trips reach Hamilton Pool, Pedernales Falls, and the Hill Country wineries west of the city.

Central Texas has a humid subtropical climate: hot summers, mild winters, and rainfall that peaks in spring and fall. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs in the seventies and eighties and the Hill Country landscape at its best. Wildflowers, including bluebonnets, typically peak from late March into April.
Summer is hot. Most summer days in Austin heat up to at least 90 degrees, and it reaches 100°F or more on about 29 days a year. Sites with shade fill first, and campers should plan for early-morning hikes, afternoon swimming at Onion Creek or Barton Springs, and full hookups for air conditioning. Onion Creek can flood after rainfall, so contact the park for current creek conditions before hitting trails at Mckinney Falls.
Winter is short and mild. Austin normally sees just one day each winter when the temperature doesn't rise above freezing, though brief hard freezes and ice events do occur. Parks stay open year-round, and reservations are easier outside major festival weekends.

Jesse is great! This is my second time renting a camper from him and he has been very easy to work with. We were camping locally and he even stopped by to check on us the day after our departure and brought us an outdoor rug just in case we got some rain! I highly recommend him and we will certainly be using him again in the future!

How to book Austin campgrounds
Mckinney Falls State Park is reserved through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system online or by phone. Most overnight camping or lodging reservations may be reserved up to five months in advance, and the park frequently sells out on weekends and around major holidays. A 14-day in, 14-day out rule is in effect for all reservable sites, and late arrivals must call the park at 512-243-1643 prior to 4:15pm on the arrival date for late arrival instructions.
Private parks such as Awkward Turtle RV Austin, Austin Lone Star RV Resort, Oak Forest RV Park, and Austin East KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or the KOA system. For SXSW in March, ACL in October, F1 in the fall, and UT home-game weekends, book several months out.
What to expect in Austin
Mckinney Falls has 81 campsites, all with water and electric hookups, plus six newly remodeled cabins and restrooms with showers. Sites are generally spacious with tree cover, and when the park reaches maximum capacity it will close to day-use visitors without a reservation, with closures common on weekends and holidays. Coolers are not allowed at the Falls, and pets must remain on a leash at all times and are not allowed to swim in the water.
Private RV parks around Austin typically offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, laundry, and pet areas. Big-rig access is generally good along I-35, Highway 71, and Highway 183, but some in-town parks have tighter turns and lower tree canopies. Cell service is strong across the metro. Summer campers should prioritize full shade, working A/C, and 50-amp service.
