Colfax camping overview
Colfax is a small town and the seat of Grant Parish in central Louisiana, located on the northeast side of the Red River. It sits within the greater Alexandria area, with pine forests, bayous, and the Kisatchie National Forest a short drive south and west. RV travelers use Colfax as a low-traffic base for exploring central Louisiana while staying close to Alexandria for groceries, fuel, and services, about 26 miles to the southeast.
Campground options range from full-hookup RV parks to rustic sites. Louisiana Mudfest Recreational Park draws off-road and event crowds several times a year, while River Cities RV Park, Hidden Treasure RV Resort, LLC, The Oaks RV Park, and Diamond T RV Park cater to travelers wanting standard pull-through or back-in sites with power, water, and sewer.
The area is flat to gently rolling and easy to navigate with larger rigs. Most nearby state and federal recreation sites are reachable within an hour, making Colfax practical for a multi-day itinerary that mixes river fishing, forest trails, and small-town stops.
Things to do around Colfax
The Red River runs along the town and supports bank fishing, kayaking, and boat launches within Grant Parish. Anglers target catfish, bass, and crappie on the river and on nearby oxbow lakes. Kisatchie National Forest, the only national forest in Louisiana, offers hiking, horseback trails, and primitive camping across ranger districts within easy driving distance.
Louisiana Mudfest Recreational Park hosts scheduled off-road events that pull large crowds, so book early during event weekends. Day trips reach Alexandria for museums and dining, Pineville for the Alexandria Zoological Park, and the Cane River Creole National Historical Park to the northwest near Natchitoches for plantation history and river-town walking tours.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping in central Louisiana. March through May brings warm days and moderate humidity, though thunderstorms and severe weather watches are common through April. Fall, from mid-September into November, cools off and dries out, and campgrounds see steady but manageable demand.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms and heat advisories frequent from June through August. Sites remain open, but shaded pads and strong AC are important. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with peak Gulf storm activity in August and September, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories when planning trips in late summer.
Winters are mild with occasional cold fronts. Freezes happen but rarely last, and most private RV parks near Colfax operate year-round. Winter is the quietest booking window, though Louisiana Mudfest event weekends can spike demand at short notice.
Booking a campground near Colfax
Private RV parks around Colfax, including River Cities RV Park, Hidden Treasure RV Resort, LLC, The Oaks RV Park, and Diamond T RV Park, typically take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Availability is generally good outside of event weekends, holidays, and hunting season openers.
For federal sites in Kisatchie National Forest, reservations are handled through Recreation.gov, with a rolling six-month booking window for most developed campgrounds. Louisiana State Parks in the region use the state parks reservation system, bookable online or by phone. Event campers at Louisiana Mudfest Recreational Park should reserve during the event registration period, since sites fill quickly once dates are announced.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Colfax are two-lane state and US highways with easy access from US-71 and US-165. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and along main routes but can drop in the national forest. Fuel, propane, and grocery runs are easiest in Alexandria and Pineville, about thirty minutes south.
Expect pine shade, some gravel pads, and mosquitoes and biting flies from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and screen rooms. Alligators live in area waterways, so keep pets leashed near ponds and bayous. Summer thunderstorms can be intense but brief, and afternoon travel should account for possible severe weather warnings.
