Downtown Lafayette offers Cajun and Zydeco music venues, boudin shops, and the CajunDome for concerts and sporting events. Scott, just east of Duson, is known for its boudin markets right off I-10, and Evangeline Downs Racetrack and area casinos are within a short drive. For state-park camping and hiking, Chicot State Park near Ville Platte and Palmetto Island State Park south of Abbeville are both within about an hour of Duson.

Lafayette Parish has a humid subtropical climate with no true dry season, high humidity, and significant rainfall throughout the year. Spring and fall are the most comfortable travel windows. Late February through April and October through November offer milder temperatures, lower humidity, and generally lighter rainfall, which makes them the strongest windows for RV trips built around outdoor activity. Summer is hot and wet. August averages a high near 92°F and a low near 74°F, and heat-index values regularly climb well above the actual air temperature. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and mosquitoes are heavy near swamps and bayous. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk in August and September, so RV travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and be ready to reroute. Winter is mild but damp. January averages a high near 62°F and a low near 42°F, snow is rare, and most private parks remain open. Festival season peaks around the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival in May and Mardi Gras in late winter, when sites fill early.

Most private parks near Duson are set up for full-hookup RV camping with 30- and 50-amp service, sewer, water, and cable or WiFi. Frog City RV Park offers 62 full-hookup sites with 20/30/50-amp electrical, water, sewer, and cable TV, plus a swimming pool, coin laundry, private showers, WiFi, picnic tables, a dump station, propane, and pet-friendly policies. Big-rig access is generally good in this area because most parks sit right off I-10. Expect train and interstate noise at parks close to the corridor, standing water and mud after heavy rain, and mosquitoes in warm months. Bring bug spray, a surge protector, and rain gear. The area is family-friendly. Pools, playgrounds, and Cajun food, live music, and swamp tours are all within easy driving distance.
