Campgrounds and RV parks near Ames, TX

Big Thicket National Preserve is the headline draw. The main corridor through the preserve is US 69/287 between Beaumont and Woodville, with smaller roads branching off to trailheads, and the visitor center sits at the intersection of US 69/287 and FM 420, about 7 miles north of Kountze. From an Ames base, day trips into the preserve give access to short interpretive walks, paddling on the Neches River, and birding through a mix of pine forest and cypress wetland. Closer to town, the Trinity River corridor offers fishing and boat ramps, and Lake Livingston lies about an hour north for larger-water recreation. Southbound, Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge and the Bolivar Peninsula put alligators, coastal birds, and Gulf beaches within reach. Houston is close enough for day trips to the Space Center, museums, and the zoo.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Ames. From March into May, daytime highs sit in the upper 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, and spring bird migration through the Big Thicket brings large numbers of species passing through the preserve on their way north. October and November bring cooler nights and lower humidity, which is prime weather for hiking and paddling. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November and peaks in late summer and early fall, so travelers should monitor forecasts closely between August and October. Insect repellent is essential from late spring through fall. Winters are mild by North American standards, with occasional cold fronts pushing lows near freezing. Many RV parks stay open through winter and fill with long-stay snowbird guests. Hunting season in the Big Thicket runs from October 1 to February 28, and during that period backcountry camping is limited to areas that do not allow hunting, which is worth planning around.

Terrain around Ames is flat, with mixed pine and hardwood, pasture, and slow bayous. Roads to the listed RV parks are paved and easy to navigate with larger rigs, and most parks offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Cell service is generally reliable near US-90 and I-10 but can thin out on backroads. Expect heat and humidity most of the year, along with mosquitoes and biting flies near water. The region has hot, humid summers and mild winters, and mosquitoes are a significant consideration for campers, so bring repellent. Afternoon thunderstorms can be intense; awnings should be stowed when storms threaten. Wildlife includes alligators in area waterways, venomous snakes, and abundant birdlife, so keep pets leashed and watch children near water.
