Fontainebleau State Park anchors most trips. Visitors can enjoy bird watching, sailing, biking, camping, and swimming, with a 1.25-mile nature trail and a 4.8-mile hiking trail for viewing wildlife. The park also features a sandy beach on Lake Pontchartrain, a splash pad, a large accessible playground, wetland boardwalks, and the ruins of an 1829 sugar mill among live oaks. The Tammany Trace, a paved rail-trail, runs nearby and links Mandeville, Abita Springs, Covington, and Slidell. On the water, boaters and anglers launch into Lake Pontchartrain and the Salt Bayou marshes for redfish and speckled trout. Honey Island Swamp tours depart from nearby Slidell. New Orleans is roughly 30 minutes south across the Twin Span Bridge, putting the French Quarter, City Park, and the National WWII Museum within easy day-trip range.
