Campgrounds near Franklinton, Louisiana
Franklinton sits in Washington Parish on the north shore region of Lake Pontchartrain, roughly an 80-minute drive north of New Orleans along Louisiana Highway 25. The town is the parish seat and serves as a quiet base for RV travellers exploring the pine forests, spring-fed creeks, and the Bogue Chitto River corridor that defines this corner of Louisiana.
The anchor for the area is Bogue Chitto State Park, a 2,593-acre site that includes small streams, cypress-tupelo swamps, hardwood and upland forests, and a rolling landscape. The park operates two RV loops referenced on this page as Upland - Bogue Chitto State Park and Equestrian - Bogue Chitto State Park, giving riders direct access to the horse-trail network.
Private options round out the mix. Land-O-Pines Family Campground Inc. sits south of Franklinton near Covington, while Paradise Ranch RV Resort and Hidden Springs RV Resort provide additional full-hookup sites within driving distance for travellers who want resort-style amenities rather than a state-park setting.
Things to do near Franklinton
The Bogue Chitto River drives most trip planning. Popular activities include tubing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing, and canoe, kayak, and tube rentals are offered at the state park. Families with younger children tend to spend time at the seasonal water playground and the park's freshwater fishing lakes.
On land, the state park has more than 7 miles of nature trails, 14 miles of equestrian trails, and roughly 25 miles of mountain-bike trails for a range of skill levels. A well-regarded 18-hole disc golf course winds through hilly wooded terrain near the group camp.
At Land-O-Pines Family Campground Inc., amenities include river frontage, a game room, a large playground, mini golf, and seasonal access to a pool and waterslide, which keeps kids occupied without leaving the property.

Summers in Franklinton are long, hot, and humid, winters are short and cool, and it is wet and partly cloudy year round. Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel: mild days, cooler nights, and fewer afternoon thunderstorms than midsummer. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in March and April, and river levels typically settle enough for good paddling.
Summer is peak family season. Water activities carry the trip, but heat indices climb into the triple digits, afternoon thunderstorms are routine, and biting insects are active. Book early for holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, when the state-park loops and private resorts fill quickly.
Fall brings cooler nights and lower humidity, along with the tail end of Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through November. Winter camping is workable thanks to mild daytime highs, but overnight lows in the 40s call for a working furnace, and heavy winter rains can close river access and affect low-lying sites.

Just want to say that Jessica and her husband were wonderful to work with. They made sure that my first RV camping experience was amazing. The camper was perfect. Air conditioning was wonderful on a very hot weekend. Also, the hot shower was perfect after a day on the river. Would throughly recommend this RV to anyone!

How to book a campsite near Franklinton
For the two Bogue Chitto State Park loops, campsites, cabins, and glamping tents are reserved through the Louisiana State Parks website or the reservation center. Bookings can be made up to 13 months in advance and must be made at least 48 hours before arrival; reservations inside that 48-hour window are handled by contacting the park directly. Reservations are accepted only from persons 21 or older, and a non-refundable transaction fee applies.
Length limits matter for larger rigs, so confirm the site's maximum RV length before locking in dates. Private parks including Land-O-Pines Family Campground Inc., Paradise Ranch RV Resort, and Hidden Springs RV Resort take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone, and holiday weekends often require multi-night minimums.
What to expect on arrival
At Bogue Chitto State Park, the campground has more than 80 pull-through sites split between the Upland and Bottomland RV areas, all with water and electric hookups, and a subset offer full hookups. Facilities include restrooms with showers, a dump station, picnic areas, and a seasonal water playground that runs Tuesday through Sunday from spring into fall.
Wildlife is part of the experience. Snakes and alligators can be present along the Bogue Chitto River, so use caution and follow posted swimming guidance. A Louisiana fishing license is required to fish the park lakes.
Private parks in the area tend to be more amenity-heavy and social. Expect gravel or grass sites, a mix of transient and long-term neighbours, and weekend activity programming aimed at families.
