Camping near Gibsland, Louisiana
Gibsland is a small town in Bienville Parish in north Louisiana, roughly 45 miles east of Shreveport and just south of Interstate 20. The area is best known as the site of the 1934 ambush of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, and most RV travelers use it as a base for the ambush site, the museum on Main Street, and the surrounding Piney Woods lakes.
Campground options within a short drive include Bonnie & Clyde RV Park near Arcadia along Highway 9, Creekwood Gardens RV Park, and KEL'S KOVE on Lake Claiborne. For a state-park experience, Lake Claiborne State Park sits on a 6,400-acre reservoir about a half hour north near Homer, with 87 campsites and 10 cabins. Pleasure Point Marina RV Resort adds a lakefront option in the region.
Expect wooded, rolling terrain, freshwater lakes stocked with bass and catfish, and easy interstate access for travelers moving between Shreveport, Monroe, and east Texas.
Things to do near Gibsland
The Bonnie & Clyde Ambush Museum on Main Street in Gibsland occupies the former Ma Canfield's Cafe, where the outlaws bought their last meal on May 23, 1934. The stone ambush marker sits about 8 miles south along Highway 154. Every May, the town hosts the Authentic Bonnie and Clyde Festival with reenactments.
Lake Claiborne State Park is the main outdoor draw, with a sandy swimming beach, marked hiking trails including the King of the Mountain Trail, kayak and canoe rentals, and two 18-basket disc golf courses. The lake is stocked with largemouth and striped bass, bluegill, channel catfish, black crappie, and bream.

Spring, from March through May, is the most popular window. Temperatures are mild, wildflowers and dogwoods bloom in the Piney Woods, and the Bonnie and Clyde Festival draws crowds in late May. It is also the wettest stretch of the year, with frequent thunderstorms and occasional severe weather, so RV travelers should watch forecasts and choose well-drained sites.
Summer is hot and humid, with daytime highs routinely in the low 90s Fahrenheit and heat indices higher. Lake Claiborne's beach, boat rentals, and shaded campsites make this a swimming and fishing season. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and mosquitoes and biting insects peak from June through September.
Fall brings cooler, drier weather and is arguably the best time for hiking, disc golf, and lakeside camping. Winter is short and mild, with occasional cold snaps and rare light snow. Lake Claiborne State Park is open year round, so shoulder-season and winter stays remain viable.
How to book a campsite
Lake Claiborne State Park is reserved through the Louisiana State Parks system at reservations.gooutdoorslouisiana.com or by phone at 1-833-609-0686. The park has 87 sites with water and electric hookups, 10 two-bedroom cabins, and primitive camping options. A non-refundable transaction fee is assessed on each reservation, and reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance.
Reservations can be made up to 13 months to the day in advance. Bookings made 10 to 13 months out require the full balance within 30 days of the request, or the reservation is canceled. Reservations inside that window require a one-night deposit within 10 days.
Private parks such as Bonnie & Clyde RV Park, Creekwood Gardens RV Park, KEL'S KOVE, and Pleasure Point Marina RV Resort are booked directly with the operator by phone or through third-party platforms. For festival weekends in May, reserve well in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into Gibsland come off I-20 exits at Arcadia and Gibsland proper, then narrow to two-lane state highways. Cell service is spotty on rural stretches, including near the ambush marker on Highway 154, so download maps in advance.
Campsites at Lake Claiborne State Park sit in wooded, sloping terrain, and many RVs will need leveling blocks. Bathhouses are climate-controlled with hot showers. Sites accommodate rigs up to 60 feet. Dogs are permitted only in designated pet-friendly cabins, with a per-dog surcharge, and personal golf carts are allowed on the property for a daily fee.
The region is quiet and rural. Grocery runs are easiest in Arcadia, Minden, or Ruston. Expect ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes in warmer months, humid summer nights, and dark skies well suited to stargazing.
