Campgrounds near Gillis, Louisiana
Gillis is an unincorporated community in Calcasieu Parish, north of Lake Charles in southwest Louisiana. The area sits within the Calcasieu River basin, a mix of pine and hardwood forest, bayous, and cypress lagoons, and functions as a quiet base for RV travelers heading to Lake Charles, the I-10 corridor, or the Creole Nature Trail toward the Gulf.
RV options within a short drive include Paradise RV Park II and Whispering Meadow RV Park for straightforward full-hookup stays, plus LeBleu Lakes RV Resort and Little Lake Charles RV Resort for longer visits with resort-style amenities. For a state-park experience, Sam Houston Jones State Park lies just south near Moss Bluff and offers improved RV sites alongside cabins, a lodge, and tent sites.
Most private parks in the Gillis area cater to a mix of overnight travelers, seasonal snowbirds, and industrial workers tied to the region's petrochemical economy, so booking ahead is advisable even outside peak vacation weeks.
Things to do near Gillis
Sam Houston Jones State Park is the main outdoor draw. The 1,087-acre park sits where the Houston River joins the West Fork of the Calcasieu River and Indian Bayou, with hiking and biking trails, two boat launches on the West Fork providing access toward Calcasieu Lake, a fishing boardwalk, and a disc golf course. The park lies in the Central Migratory Flyway, and nearly 200 bird species can be seen at or within 30 miles of the site.
Lake Charles is about a fifteen-minute drive south and provides restaurants, museums, casinos, and grocery resupply. South of the city, the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road leads to Gulf beaches, marsh boardwalks, and the Sabine and Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuges. Freshwater fishing on the Calcasieu River system is a year-round option.

Southwest Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate. Winters are mild and generally the most comfortable time to camp, with cool nights, lower humidity, and reduced insect pressure. Snowbird traffic picks up from roughly December through March, and long-stay sites at parks like LeBleu Lakes RV Resort and Little Lake Charles RV Resort tend to fill early in the season.
Spring brings warming temperatures, wildflowers, and strong bird migration windows in March and April. Rainfall is frequent but usually short-lived. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy, with afternoon thunderstorms common and heat indices often well above 100°F, so shaded sites and strong air conditioning matter.
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from August into October. Past storms have caused extended closures at Sam Houston Jones State Park and nearby facilities, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm site availability before arrival during late summer and early fall.
How to book campgrounds near Gillis
Sam Houston Jones State Park is reserved through the Louisiana State Parks system at reservations.gooutdoorslouisiana.com or by calling the state reservation center. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance and must be booked at least 48 hours before arrival; inside that window, contact the park directly. The park offers improved RV sites, cabins, a lodge, and tent sites, with a two-night minimum on weekends.
Private parks including Paradise RV Park II, Whispering Meadow RV Park, LeBleu Lakes RV Resort, and Little Lake Charles RV Resort are typically booked directly by phone or through each park's website. For winter snowbird stays and any weekend overlapping a Lake Charles festival, reserve several months out.
What to expect
Expect flat terrain, tall pines, and plenty of standing water nearby. Most RV parks in the Gillis area offer full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, and sites are generally level and pull-through friendly. Cell coverage is reliable near the I-10 corridor; tree cover at Sam Houston Jones State Park can reduce signal in spots.
Bring insect repellent year-round, sun protection for open sites, and rain gear from spring through fall. Alligators are present in local waterways, so keep pets leashed and away from shorelines. Fuel, groceries, propane, and RV supplies are readily available in Moss Bluff and Lake Charles, both a short drive from most campgrounds in the area.

There's no special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required for any motorhome or travel trailer on RVezy, whether you're driving a compact campervan or a 35-foot Class A. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking, so there's nothing to print or fax. Visiting from abroad? help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental insurance and roadside assistance included in Gillis?
Yes, and that's one of the best parts of booking through RVezy. Every Gillis RV rental includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle, giving you real financial peace of mind without arranging third-party coverage. You choose your preferred protection level during the booking process, so you can dial coverage up or down based on your comfort. If you get a flat tire on Highway 27 or a dead battery at your campsite, one phone call gets help dispatched. It's the kind of safety net that makes a Gillis RV trip feel relaxed from the start.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Gillis RV rental?
You can book with confidence. RVezy, not the individual host, sets and manages the cancellation policy, so you get consistent treatment no matter which Gillis listing you choose. Refund outcomes depend on how far out from your trip you cancel and the policy tier shown at checkout. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your plans stay protected. If a tropical storm threatens your Gillis dates during hurricane season, contact RVezy support right away and they'll walk you through your options. That flexibility makes it low-risk to lock in your dates early when prices are best.

Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is clearly listed before you book, so there are no surprises. Once you're rolling, Sam Houston Jones State Park just south of Gillis allows leashed pets on trails, and the Creole Nature Trail's boardwalks at Sabine National Wildlife Refuge are perfect for stretching paws. Message the host before booking to confirm your specific pet, especially if it's large, and you'll usually get a fast yes.
lastateparks.com/parks/sam-houston-jones-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Gillis?
Yes, RV delivery in Gillis is one of the most popular options, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive the RV to your campground, vacation rental, or driveway, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. That means no towing stress, no backing into a tight site, and no figuring out the propane on your own. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it, with many hosts delivering within 20 miles for a flat fee and charging a per-mile rate beyond that to spots like Sam Houston Jones State Park or Niblett's Bluff Park. It's the easiest possible start to your Louisiana adventure.

That little step keeps your fuel and mileage budget predictable.

Southwest Louisiana's sweet spot is October through April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to 70s degrees Fahrenheit and humidity drops to bearable levels. Spring (March to May) brings wildflowers along the Creole Nature Trail and excellent birding at Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge. Summer in Gillis is hot and humid (highs in the low 90s degrees Fahrenheit), and Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, so keep an eye on forecasts. Winter is genuinely mild here, with rare freezes, making December and January great for snowbird-style RV camping. Target late October for Calcasieu Parish festivals and mosquito-light weather, the locals' favorite RV season.
weather.gov/lch/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one out of Gillis?
You'll do great, and Gillis is one of the easier places in Louisiana to learn. Roads around Gillis are mostly flat, straight, and lightly trafficked, with wide rural highways like LA-378 and US-171 perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering everything from mirrors and braking to dumping tanks and lighting the stove. If you'd rather skip the driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup so the RV is waiting for you at the campsite. Take 15 minutes after pickup to do a slow practice loop through the Gillis-area country roads before merging onto I-10 toward Lake Charles.
rvezy.com/blog/first-time-rv-renter-guideWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is one phone call away, around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tow services if needed. If something inside the RV acts up (a finicky fridge or a stubborn slide-out), your host is your first call since they know their rig best and can often troubleshoot in minutes. For anything bigger, RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. With major service centers in nearby Lake Charles, you're never far from help on a Gillis RV trip. That safety net is what makes families feel confident booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Gillis RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Yes to neighboring U.S. states, no to Mexico. An RV road trip from Gillis into Texas (just 30 miles west), Mississippi, Arkansas, or beyond is fully allowed and very popular, and your protection plan travels with you across U.S. state lines. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance terms, so message the host before booking if that's your plan. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance and protection don't extend there. Popular interstate routes from Gillis include the Texas Hill Country, the Gulf Coast beaches of Mississippi and Alabama, and the Ozarks. Confirm your itinerary with your host so they can plan mileage and fuel stops with you.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I expect?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward in Louisiana, where gas prices typically run below the national average. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for Class B campervans, and tow-vehicle dependent figures for travel trailers (usually 10 to 13 MPG). For a 500-mile loop from Gillis to New Orleans and back in a Class C, plan on around $180 to $220 in fuel at current pump prices. Fill up at Pilot or Love's along I-10 in Lake Charles before heading east, prices there often beat the smaller stations closer to Cajun country, and the big lots have easy RV access.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Gillis?
Earlier is better, but you've got options. Sam Houston Jones State Park accepts reservations well in advance through the Louisiana State Parks system, and spring weekends (March to May) and the October festival season fill up first. Private parks like Cajun RV Park and Niblett's Bluff usually book 1 to 3 months out, though weekday sites often have last-minute availability. For peak Mardi Gras week or Contraband Days in Lake Charles, reserve 6 months ahead minimum. If your dream campground is full, ask to be added to its cancellation waitlist and book a nearby backup. Last-minute openings happen constantly, especially in the days before arrival.
lastateparks.com/parks/sam-houston-jones-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like around Gillis?
Driving an RV around Gillis is refreshingly low-stress. The terrain is flat, the rural roads are wide, and traffic is light outside of Lake Charles rush hours (7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM weekdays). Watch for two local hazards: sudden afternoon thunderstorms from May through September, which can drop heavy rain fast, and occasional flooding on low-lying roads after big storms. I-10 through Lake Charles can get windy crossing the Calcasieu River bridge, so reduce speed in a tall rig. Check the Louisiana 511 traffic site before each leg of your trip for real-time road and weather updates.
511la.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Gillis?
Most campgrounds around Gillis are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Sam Houston Jones State Park offers electric and water hookups at improved RV sites along with hot showers, a dump station, and potable water fill-ups. Private parks like Cajun RV Park and Niblett's Bluff add laundry, Wi-Fi, pools, and propane refills. Dump stations are available at Sam Houston Jones and at many Pilot/Flying J truck stops along I-10 in Lake Charles. Potable water is easy to find at any state park entrance. Even with full hookups, bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a sewer hose support kit since site layouts in Louisiana parks can vary.
lastateparks.com/parks/sam-houston-jones-state-parkWhat's inside a typical Gillis RV rental?
You'll be surprised how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Gillis includes a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 people, climate control with both AC and furnace, and dedicated seatbelts for every traveler. Many listings come with a TV, and some include Wi-Fi hotspots or onboard generators for boondocking. Class A and Class C motorhomes usually sleep more, while campervan rentals in Gillis are perfect for couples wanting a nimble Gulf Coast escape. Check the listing photos and amenity list carefully, and message the host to confirm specifics like outdoor speakers, awning lights, or bike racks before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gillis%2C%20LouisianaWhat add-ons and pickup options do Gillis hosts offer?
Lots of great extras make your trip easier. Common add-ons from Gillis hosts include linens and bedding packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor camping chairs and tables, bike racks, propane refills, generators, and even kayaks or fishing gear, perfect for hitting the Calcasieu River. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Gillis, with delivery available within a 20 to 50 mile radius for an added fee (often a flat rate under 20 miles). Mileage policies vary by listing, so look for that detail on each page. Bundle linens and a kitchen kit so you can step in and start cooking that first night, no Walmart run required after a long drive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gillis%2C%20LouisianaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, no cash or checks change hands with the host. You'll pay your rental total (nightly rate plus any add-ons and protection plan) at booking with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, with the amount listed clearly on each Gillis listing before you confirm. The deposit is released after your trip ends and the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Take a quick video walkaround of the inside and outside of the RV at both pickup and dropoff and share it with your host. It's a 5-minute habit that keeps deposit returns smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I prepare for hurricane season on a Gillis RV trip?
Smart planning makes hurricane season totally manageable. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August and September. Before booking those months, check the National Hurricane Center forecast and review RVezy's cancellation policy for storm-related changes. If a storm is named while you're already on the road, your host and RVezy support can help you reposition inland (Alexandria and Shreveport are common safe-haven cities, both within 3 to 4 hours of Gillis). October is statistically calmer than August or September while still offering warm, sunny weather, so it's a smart window for a family RV trip in Gillis without the storm anxiety.
