Campgrounds and RV parks near Golden Meadow, LA

The main draw is water. Charter boats out of Golden Meadow, Leeville, and Grand Isle target speckled trout, redfish, sheepshead, flounder, and offshore species such as tarpon, tuna, and wahoo. Surf fishing runs year round from the beach at Grand Isle State Park, with speckled trout strong in spring and summer and redfish moving into surf range in fall and winter. A valid Louisiana fishing license with a saltwater stamp is required. Grand Isle State Park has about three miles of nature trails, an observation tower over the Gulf, a crabbing pier, and a fishing pier extending into open Gulf water. Birders can work the lagoons and shore during spring migration, when neotropical songbird fallouts sometimes drop thousands of warblers and tanagers onto the barrier island. Off the water, day trips to Houma reach swamp tours, Cajun music venues, and local boudin and seafood stops.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of coastal Louisiana. Daytime highs are warm without being oppressive, humidity backs off, and biting insects are lighter than in midsummer. Spring brings peak songbird migration through the barrier islands and strong inshore fishing. Fall shifts the fishing to redfish in the surf and generally produces the driest, clearest weather of the year. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy, with afternoon thunderstorms and mosquito pressure that can be intense in the marsh. It also coincides with the Atlantic hurricane season, which the National Hurricane Center defines as June 1 through November 30, peaking from mid-August into October. Coastal Louisiana parks including Grand Isle State Park have closed for extended periods after direct hurricane strikes, so travelers should monitor NHC advisories and confirm park status before arrival. Winter is mild rather than cold, with hard freezes rare on the coast. Some inland small parks stay busy with oilfield workers, while beach camping thins out and wind on the Gulf picks up.

LA 1 south of Golden Meadow is a two-lane highway with an elevated toll section between Leeville and Grand Isle. Big rigs and fifth-wheels can use it, but expect wind exposure over open water and limited turnaround options once past Leeville. Fuel and grocery stops thin out quickly south of Golden Meadow, so top off in town. The landscape is flat marsh, bayou, and beach. The main camping area at Grand Isle State Park consists of pull-through sites with water and electric hookups but no sewer at the site; a central dump station sits directly outside the campground, and two bathhouses serve the loop. Fourteen unimproved tent sites are on the beach and must be reached on foot, since vehicles are not allowed on the sand. Cell coverage is generally usable but not fast. Bring heavy insect repellent, a fan for warm nights, and secure loose gear against Gulf wind. Shuffling feet in the surf reduces stingray encounters.
