Campgrounds near Gretna, Louisiana
Gretna sits on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, directly across from downtown New Orleans in Jefferson Parish. For RV travelers, that location is the draw: campgrounds within a short drive put the French Quarter, Garden District, and Barataria wetlands all within reach of a single home base.
Options cluster in two directions. On the West Bank near Gretna and Westwego, Bayou Segnette State Park offers a large public campground with water and electric hookups on the edge of swamp and marsh. On the East Bank, private parks such as French Quarter RV Resort, Jude Travel Park of New Orleans, and Riverboat Travel Park sit closer to the Quarter itself and typically offer full hookups aimed at travelers who want to walk, bike, or rideshare into the city.
Further out, Three Oaks and Pine RV Park serves as a quieter suburban option for travelers who prefer to stage outside the urban core and drive in for day trips.
Things to do near Gretna
The French Quarter, Frenchmen Street, and the Garden District are the obvious anchors, all reachable in roughly fifteen to twenty minutes from the West Bank by car or by taking the Algiers ferry across the river. Families staying near Gretna also have easy access to the Audubon Aquarium, Louisiana Children's Museum, and City Park.
For an outdoor day, the Barataria Preserve unit of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park offers boardwalk trails through cypress swamp and marsh, with strong odds of spotting alligators, herons, and turtles. Bayou Segnette State Park itself has a wave pool, boat launch, playgrounds, and a nature trail that work well for kids between city outings.
Swamp tours, plantation drives along River Road, and day trips to Grand Isle round out the options.

The New Orleans area has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, wet summers. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the 70s and low 80s and lower humidity than midsummer. Spring is also festival season, so campgrounds near the city can book out weeks or months ahead around Mardi Gras, French Quarter Fest, and Jazz Fest.
Summer brings daily highs in the low 90s, high humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks between mid-August and mid-October, so travelers should watch National Hurricane Center forecasts and understand each park's evacuation policy before booking during that window.
Winters are mild, with highs often in the 60s and only rare freezes. Sites are easier to secure outside festival weekends, and Bayou Segnette State Park is open year round.
How to book near Gretna
Bayou Segnette State Park is reserved through the Louisiana State Parks system at reservations.gooutdoorslouisiana.com or by phone at 1-877-CAMP-N-LA. Campsite reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance and typically require at least a two-day lead time. A non-refundable reservation fee applies to each transaction, and cancellation or transfer fees increase as arrival approaches.
Private parks including French Quarter RV Resort, Jude Travel Park of New Orleans, Riverboat Travel Park, and Three Oaks and Pine RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and several are also listed on aggregators such as Good Sam and RoverPass.
Book well ahead for Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, Essence Fest, and Sugar Bowl weekends, when demand near the city spikes.
What to expect on the ground
Elevation around Gretna and greater New Orleans is at or below sea level, so campgrounds are flat and often built on fill or levee-side land. Expect paved or concrete pads at most private urban parks, and improved sites at Bayou Segnette State Park. The state park's 98 campsites have water and electric hookups, with a dump station on site rather than sewer at each pad.
Mosquitoes and biting flies are heavy from late spring through early fall, especially near the swamps and marshes. Bring repellent, screens, and expect to see alligators in nearby waterways: keep pets leashed and clear of the water's edge.
City-adjacent parks are typically gated with security fencing; some sit close to major highways, so traffic noise is worth checking against site maps at booking.

How much does an RV rental in Gretna typically cost?

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gretna,LouisianaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Gretna?

Louisiana does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers booked through RVezy. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified right through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're ready to cross the Crescent City Connection.

You can book your Gretna RV rental with confidence because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the individual host. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds guests or provides credits so you're not left stranded. Absolutely, and Gretna is a great launchpad for a pup-friendly Louisiana adventure. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who welcome dogs, then message them directly about any breed or size questions before you book. Bayou Segnette State Park, just minutes from downtown Gretna in Westwego, allows leashed pets on trails and at campsites, and the Mississippi River levee path in Gretna itself is a favorite for morning dog walks. New Orleans City Park across the river also has a fenced dog park, perfect for an off-leash romp after a day exploring.
lastateparks.com/parks/bayou-segnette-state-parkCan the RV be delivered right to my campground in Gretna?
Yes, RV delivery in Gretna is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig through metro New Orleans traffic. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to Bayou Segnette State Park, Pontchartrain Landing, or even a private driveway on the West Bank, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Filter listings by Delivery to see hosts offering this service, and check each listing for the delivery fee, which typically scales with distance. It's the easiest way to start your Gretna RV trip stress-free.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gretna,LouisianaHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Gretna?
Gretna sits at a perfect crossroads for a Gulf South RV road trip, and many RVezy hosts offer generous mileage allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage. Within an easy day's drive you can hit Lafayette and Cajun Country (about 135 miles west), Gulf Shores, Alabama (about 180 miles east), Natchez, Mississippi (about 170 miles north), or the white sands of Pensacola, Florida (about 235 miles). Check each listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you're planning a longer loop, simply message the host to arrange a higher mileage package up front. That way there are no surprises at drop-off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gretna,LouisianaWhere are the best campgrounds near Gretna to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Gretna. Bayou Segnette State Park in nearby Westwego offers RV sites with hookups, a wave pool, and easy access to swamp tours. Pontchartrain Landing on the north side of New Orleans has resort-style amenities and a shuttle option to the French Quarter. French Quarter RV Resort puts you within walking distance of Frenchmen Street, while St. Bernard State Park, about 25 minutes southeast, offers shaded sites under live oaks. For quieter stays, Jude Travel Park near Slidell is roughly 35 minutes east of Gretna.
lastateparks.com/parks/bayou-segnette-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for a Gretna RV trip?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Gretna is mid-October through late April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 60s to upper 70s Fahrenheit and humidity eases. February typically brings Mardi Gras and lively parades right in downtown Gretna, March and April offer mild weather plus French Quarter Fest, and December delivers festive holiday events nearby. Summer (June through September) is hot, humid, and squarely in hurricane season, so many renters skip it. Book your Gretna RV rental early for the first weekend of December to catch Gretna's Christmas tree lighting and a quieter French Quarter.
weather.gov/lix/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Gretna area?
First time renting an RV? You'll do great in Gretna, and your host is your built-in safety net. Every RVezy booking includes a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and the dump station, so you won't leave the driveway until you feel ready. Gretna's West Bank streets are wider and less congested than the French Quarter side, making it a friendlier launchpad for new drivers than downtown New Orleans. Stick to I-10 and the Crescent City Connection for river crossings, avoid narrow streets in Algiers Point, and you'll quickly feel like a pro. Hosts and RVezy support are a quick message away the whole trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180693-For-rentersWhat if something breaks down during my Gretna RV trip?
Take a deep breath: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is just one phone call away whether you're on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway or boondocked in Plaquemines Parish. Roadside covers common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified repair shop. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their RV, so a quick message often solves smaller issues on the spot. Save RVezy support's number in your phone before you leave Gretna and you can focus on the gumbo, not the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Gretna RV rental on a longer cross-state road trip?
Absolutely. An RV road trip from Gretna opens up the entire Gulf South, and most RVezy hosts welcome multi-state itineraries within the continental US. Popular routes include the Creole Nature Trail loop toward Lake Charles (about 210 miles west), a Mississippi Gulf Coast crawl from Bay St. Louis to Biloxi (60 to 90 miles east), the Natchez Trace Parkway north toward Tupelo (about 380 miles), and Florida's Emerald Coast for white-sand beaches. Cross-border trips into Canada or Mexico depend on host approval and insurance coverage, so message the host directly from the listing before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Gretna RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on any RV road trip, but Louisiana typically has some of the lower gas prices in the country. Plan for roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon on Class A and Class C motorhomes, 12 to 18 MPG on campervans, and figure your tow vehicle's normal MPG minus about 30 percent if you're pulling a travel trailer. Fill up on the West Bank in Gretna or Harvey before crossing the river, as stations closer to downtown New Orleans can charge a premium. A weekend loop to Lafayette and back typically runs most renters $80 to $130 in gas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Gretna?
For the best campgrounds near Gretna, plan to reserve 3 to 6 months ahead for peak windows like Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest (late April to early May), French Quarter Fest, and any Saints home game weekend. Louisiana State Park sites, including Bayou Segnette, book through the state's official reservation system on a rolling window, so the earlier the better. For shoulder season trips in November or early February, you can often grab a spot 2 to 3 weeks out. Weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have availability, even during festival weeks.
reserveamerica.com/explore/bayou-segnette-state-park/LA/521033/overviewWhat are the driving conditions like around Gretna and New Orleans?
Gretna sits on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, which is a blessing for RV drivers because streets are wider, traffic is lighter, and you avoid the narrow lanes of the French Quarter. The Crescent City Connection bridge into downtown New Orleans easily accommodates standard RVs. Watch for sudden afternoon thunderstorms from May through September, occasional street flooding after heavy rain, and pothole-prone surface roads. Avoid driving any big rig into the French Quarter, Marigny, or Bywater, where streets are tight and balconies hang low. Stick to I-10, US-90, and the elevated expressways and you'll cruise easy.
511la.org/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Gretna?
Most full-service RV parks around Gretna offer 30/50-amp electric, fresh water, sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and on-site dump stations. Bayou Segnette State Park has full-hookup RV sites plus a wave pool the kids will love, while Pontchartrain Landing adds a marina, restaurant, and shuttle service. For potable water fills and dump stations between stops, Louisiana state parks often welcome day-use travelers for a small fee. Bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 90-degree sewer elbow, since older South Louisiana parks sometimes have offset hookup placements.
lastateparks.com/parks/bayou-segnette-state-parkWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Gretna?
Most RVs on RVezy in Gretna come ready to roll with real beds (often a queen in the main bedroom), a kitchen with fridge, stovetop, microwave, and often an oven, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning (a must in Louisiana), heating, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many motorhome rentals in Gretna also include flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth stereos, onboard generators for boondocking, and outdoor awnings perfect for crawfish boils at the campsite. Each listing spells out exactly what's included, plus optional add-ons like bedding, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and bike racks. Message the host with any specific questions before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gretna,LouisianaWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and drop-off work?
Gretna hosts on RVezy offer a wide menu of add-ons to customize your trip: linens and towel packages, stocked kitchen kits, generators, portable grills, bike racks, kayak carriers, camp chairs, outdoor rugs, and sometimes pre-stocked groceries. Many also offer RV delivery in Gretna directly to your campground for a flat fee, saving you the drive entirely. Pickup is typically at the host's driveway in Gretna, Harvey, Marrero, or Algiers and includes a 30 to 60-minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary by listing, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per day, so check the listing's mileage section and message the host if you need more for your route.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Gretna,LouisianaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in Gretna is handled securely through the RVezy platform, so you'll never hand cash or a personal check to a host. You'll pay your trip total at booking with a credit card, and a refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup, then released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick video walkaround at pickup with your host, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks if your agreement requires it. The deposit is separate from your booking payment, keeping the process transparent for both sides.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle Gulf Coast heat and hurricane season in my RV?
Summer in Gretna brings highs in the low 90s with serious humidity, but your RV is built for it: rooftop air conditioning, tinted windows, and shaded awnings keep things comfortable. Park with the door facing away from the afternoon sun, run AC on shore power whenever possible, and drive early in the day to avoid pop-up thunderstorms. Hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with peak risk in August and September. Track the National Hurricane Center, follow local evacuation orders without hesitation, and know that RVezy's policies account for major named storms affecting your trip.
