Camping near Harvey, Louisiana
Harvey sits on the West Bank of the Mississippi River in Jefferson Parish, directly across from New Orleans and roughly 15 minutes from the French Quarter by way of the Crescent City Connection. The location suits RV travelers who want quick access to the city without parking a rig in dense urban neighborhoods.
Campground options in the immediate area range from urban RV parks to a large state park. Bayou Segnette State Park in neighboring Westwego offers 98 sites with water and electricity, a dump station, and a boat launch with access to the marshlands and waterways of the bayou. French Quarter RV Resort, New Orleans RV Resort and Marina, Riverboat Travel Park, and Jude Travel Park of New Orleans provide RV-focused amenities closer to the city core.
Most sites in the area are designed for standard Class C and travel trailer rigs, though Bayou Segnette accommodates rigs up to 60 feet. Reservations are strongly advised year-round because New Orleans events, festivals, and cruise-ship traffic keep demand high across every season.
Things to do near Harvey
The Barataria Preserve unit of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park lies a short drive south and offers boardwalk trails through cypress swamp and marsh, with alligator, wading bird, and reptile sightings common. Bayou Segnette State Park adds a popular wave pool and adjacent waterways for boating, along with abundant wildlife, plus fishing for bass and catfish, a nature trail, and playgrounds.
Across the river, the French Quarter, Garden District, City Park, and the National WWII Museum are all within roughly 20 minutes by car. Travelers staying at French Quarter RV Resort or Jude Travel Park of New Orleans can reach Bourbon Street, Frenchmen Street, and Audubon Zoo without repositioning the RV.

Peak camping demand in the Harvey and greater New Orleans area runs from roughly February through May, driven by Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, French Quarter Fest, and generally comfortable temperatures. Sites at Bayou Segnette State Park and the closer-in RV parks often fill weeks or months in advance for those windows, and holiday weekends book solid well ahead.
Summer is hot, humid, and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and daily highs near 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with statistical peak activity in August and September. Travelers during those months should track National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm cancellation policies before arrival.
Late fall and early winter bring cooler, drier conditions and lighter crowds outside of holiday weeks. Bayou Segnette State Park is open 365 days per year, and reservations remain necessary in every season through the Louisiana State Parks system.
How to book campgrounds near Harvey
Bayou Segnette State Park reservations are handled through the Louisiana State Parks reservation system (Reserve America), online or by phone. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the desired date and can be made up to 13 months in advance. A $4.50 non-refundable fee is assessed on each reservation transaction made online, via phone, or as a walk-in.
Privately operated parks including French Quarter RV Resort, New Orleans RV Resort and Marina, Riverboat Travel Park, and Jude Travel Park of New Orleans take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, French Quarter Fest, Essence Fest, and Sugar Bowl weekends, book several months in advance and confirm rig-length limits, big-rig access, and any event-week minimum-stay requirements.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain across the West Bank is flat and low-lying, with sites at Bayou Segnette State Park set at the edge of cypress swamp and grassy marsh. Expect mosquitoes and other biting insects from spring through fall, along with resident alligators in park waterways, so keep pets leashed and children supervised near the water.
Urban RV parks close to downtown tend to be tighter in layout with paved or gravel pads and full hookups, while Bayou Segnette offers more space and greenery with water and electric service. Cell coverage is generally strong across the metro area. Public transit and rideshare from West Bank parks into the French Quarter is straightforward, which lets travelers avoid driving the RV into narrow city streets.
