Campgrounds near Hessmer, Louisiana
Hessmer is a small village in Avoyelles Parish in central Louisiana, a short drive from the parish seat of Marksville. The area sits in the humid subtropical belt of the state, with flat pine and hardwood country, cypress swamps, and easy access to Lake Chicot and the Atchafalaya basin. RV travelers use Hessmer as a base for casino trips, fishing, and family water-park stops without the traffic of Baton Rouge or Lafayette.
Five campgrounds anchor the search radius. Gator Grounds RV Resort and Water Park sits near Bunkie and pairs full-hookup sites with slides, pools, a lazy river, and an on-site golf course. Paragon Casino RV Resort in Marksville is the largest full-service option, tied to the Tunica-Biloxi tribe's casino resort. Red River Valley RV Park and Stelly's Campground offer quieter private stays, while South Landing Chicot State Park delivers a state-park experience on Lake Chicot southwest of town.
Most sites are open year round, though water-park amenities and state-park loops follow seasonal patterns worth checking before locking in dates.
Things to do near Hessmer
Water is the main draw. Lake Chicot supports largemouth bass and crappie fishing, with three boat launches and boat rentals inside the state park. More than 20 miles of hiking trails encircle the lake, and an 8-mile canoe trail winds through cypress-filled waters. The Louisiana State Arboretum, located within Chicot State Park, protects a mature beech-magnolia forest with several miles of labeled nature trails.
Families book Gator Grounds RV Resort and Water Park for its outdoor slides, indoor water park, lazy river, and public golf course. Paragon Casino RV Resort adds a casino, three-screen cinema, championship golf at Tamahka Trails, and Kids Quest supervised childcare. Marksville itself has the Tunica-Biloxi Cultural and Educational Resources Center and the Marksville Prehistoric Indian Site.

Central Louisiana runs long, hot, humid summers and short, mild winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with lower humidity and reliable daytime warmth. Summer thunderstorms are common in the afternoons but usually pass quickly, and sites tend to dry out fast.
At Gator Grounds, the outdoor water park operates on a seasonal schedule, with weekend-only hours in spring and fall and daily hours through the peak summer months. The indoor pool facility extends family water play into cooler months when the outdoor park is closed. Check the operator's site for current opening dates before booking.
Chicot State Park stays open year round, with drinking water, flush toilets, and hot showers at the campground. Fall and spring bring the biggest fishing and hiking crowds. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, and while central Louisiana is inland, tropical remnants can push heavy rain into Avoyelles Parish and briefly affect access.
