Camping near Jena, Louisiana
Jena is a small town in LaSalle Parish in central Louisiana, surrounded by pine woods, bayous, and the wildlife-rich basin around Catahoula Lake. Kisatchie National Forest, the state's only national forest, spreads across seven parishes and is divided into five Ranger Districts totaling more than 600,000 acres. The Catahoula Ranger District lies immediately southwest of Jena and anchors most of the public-land camping in the area.
RV travelers using Jena as a base typically choose privately operated parks along US 84 and LA 28 for full hookups and pull-through sites. Diamond T RV Park and Country Living RV Park sit closest to town, while Red River Valley RV Park, Lakeview Paradise RV Park, and The Oaks RV Park serve travelers heading toward the Red River, Catahoula Lake, and the Alexandria corridor.
The region works well for anglers, hunters in season, and families looking for a quieter alternative to the busier Gulf Coast parks. Jena also sits within reasonable driving range of Alexandria, Natchitoches, and Vidalia, making it a practical overnight stop for RVers crossing Louisiana on US 84 or heading between Texas and Mississippi.
Things to do around Jena
Outdoor activity centers on Kisatchie National Forest and the lakes east and south of town. The forest offers dozens of developed recreation sites and more than 100 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding across rolling pine hills. Its lakes, bayous, and reservoirs offer boating, fishing, and swimming.
Catahoula Lake, a federally recognized wetland of international importance, draws waterfowl hunters and birders, especially in fall and winter. The Ouachita and Red rivers offer bass and catfish fishing within a short drive. Kisatchie also has designated multiple-use trails open to OHV riding, including the Sandstone and Enduro systems.
For rainy-day options, families head to Alexandria for the zoo, museums, and shopping, roughly 45 minutes south of Jena.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping around Jena. March through May brings warming days, blooming dogwoods and azaleas along Kisatchie trails, and manageable humidity, though thunderstorms are common. October and November deliver cooler nights, drier air, and the region's lowest rainfall totals, making them prime months for tent-and-RV combinations and for waterfowl activity on Catahoula Lake.
Summer is hot and humid. In Jena, the summers are long, hot, and oppressive; the winters are short, cold, and wet; and it is partly cloudy year round. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine from June through August, so RVers should plan for early-morning outings and shaded sites.
Winter is mild by northern standards but wet. Many private RV parks stay open year-round, while some remote Kisatchie sites reduce services in the coldest weeks. Hunting seasons run through fall and winter on national forest and WMA land, so campers should check current dates before booking near hunt areas.
How to book
Private RV parks near Jena, including Diamond T RV Park, Country Living RV Park, Red River Valley RV Park, Lakeview Paradise RV Park, and The Oaks RV Park, typically take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Booking a week or two ahead is usually sufficient outside of hunting season and major holidays; for deer season and Thanksgiving week, reserve earlier.
Developed campgrounds inside Kisatchie National Forest are managed by the U.S. Forest Service and reservable through Recreation.gov, with a portion of sites often held as first-come, first-served. Dispersed camping is generally allowed on national forest land outside of designated recreation areas, subject to the Motor Vehicle Use Map for each Ranger District.
What to expect
Expect a rural, small-town setting. Jena itself has grocery stores, fuel, propane, and basic RV supplies, but specialty repairs and larger stores are in Alexandria. Cell coverage is generally good in town and along US 84, and weaker inside the national forest.
Sites at the local RV parks tend to be level with full hookups, gravel or grass pads, and long pull-throughs suited to larger rigs and towables. Shade from mature pines and oaks is common, which helps during summer heat. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and chiggers, are active from spring through early fall, so bring repellent and long sleeves for evening cookouts.
Wildlife is part of the experience: deer, wild turkey, alligators in slow-moving water, and abundant songbirds. Secure food and trash, and keep pets leashed near waterways.
