Campgrounds near Jonesboro
Jonesboro sits in Jackson Parish in north-central Louisiana, surrounded by piney hills, small lakes, and Kisatchie National Forest tracts. RV travelers use the town as a base for Caney Lake fishing, mountain biking near Ruston, and short drives to Monroe and Shreveport.
The closest developed RV camping is at Jimmie Davis State Park, located on a peninsula on Caney Creek Reservoir in the small town of Chatham, roughly a half-hour east of Jonesboro. West of Jonesboro, the Ruston area adds several options within about 45 minutes, including Lincoln Parish Park, Ruston Sports Complex RV Park, and Creekwood Gardens RV Park. Flynn's Camping Grounds provides a closer-in option for travelers who want to stay near Jonesboro itself.
Expect a mix of full-hookup state park sites, parish-run lakeside camping, and small private RV parks. Rigs of most lengths can be accommodated at the state park and parish park, while smaller private grounds tend to suit mid-size trailers and Class C motorhomes.
Things to do near Jonesboro
Fishing is the dominant draw. Jimmie Davis State Park offers two boat launches and a fishing pier on Caney Lake, which was created by damming Caney Creek in 1986, and the lake is known for record-class largemouth bass and sunfish. Swimming beaches, water playgrounds, and playgrounds round out the family options.
Mountain bikers head to Lincoln Parish Park near Ruston. Rated as one of the best mountain bike trails in America, the 10-mile trail offers a challenging and exciting course for both advanced riders and beginners. In May 2024, the park opened the Waterfall MTB Hub that leads to five state-of-the-art flow trails designed for riders of all skill levels.
Paddlers can kayak the lake at Lincoln Parish Park, and cyclists use both parks for road and gravel rides through the surrounding pine forest.

North Louisiana runs on a long, hot summer and a short, mild winter. In Jonesboro, the summers are hot and oppressive; the winters are short, cold, and wet; and it is partly cloudy year round. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity than midsummer.
Spring brings the wettest weather. The month of April experiences the highest amount of precipitation, with an average value of 129 mm, and severe thunderstorms are common from March through May. Summer heat and humidity peak in July and August, when shaded lakeside sites and 50-amp hookups for air conditioning become essential.
Fall is a favorite window for anglers and cyclists at Caney Lake and Lincoln Parish Park, with cooler air and steadier weather through October and November. Winter camping is workable at the state park, though occasional cold snaps and rainy periods should be expected. Reservations at Jimmie Davis State Park fill fastest for spring weekends, summer holidays, and fall bass tournaments.
How to book campgrounds near Jonesboro
Jimmie Davis State Park is booked through the Louisiana State Parks reservation system on the ReserveAmerica platform. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance, and can be made up to 13 months to the day in advance online or by calling the reservation center at 1-833-609-0686, and lakeside sites go quickly for weekends and holidays. If reservations are made 10 or more months in advance for campsites, customers have 10 days to send in the first night's use fee deposit or the reservation will be cancelled.
Lincoln Parish Park is run by the parish, not the state. Sites and pavilions can be reserved online, or the park can be contacted directly at (318) 251-5156 to make reservations. Private grounds such as Flynn's Camping Grounds, Ruston Sports Complex RV Park, and Creekwood Gardens RV Park generally take reservations by phone or through their own websites; call ahead in peak season.
What to expect
Sites near Jonesboro trend toward wooded, pine-shaded settings with concrete, red-clay, or gravel pads. Jimmie Davis State Park has 73 camping sites, each equipped with a table, tent pad, and fire ring, with electric and water hookups available. Access roads can be rough in places, so plan tank management around the park's dump station.
Lincoln Parish Park is also a great place to park an RV, with full hookups including water, sewage, and electricity at each site. Sites include concrete pads with both pull-through and back-in options, and waterfront back-in spots feature gated patios overlooking the lake.
Cell coverage can be spotty in the wooded areas around Caney Lake, mosquitoes are active from spring through fall, and ticks are common on trails. Bring bug spray, a surge protector, and leveling blocks.
