Campgrounds and RV parks near Lafitte, LA

Lafitte is built for water. The Barataria Preserve unit of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park covers more than 26,000 acres of bayous, swamps, marshes, and forests, with elevated boardwalks and dirt trails for spotting alligators and over 200 species of birds. Local operators run swamp tours, airboat rides, and inshore fishing charters from the town and nearby Crown Point. At Bayou Segnette State Park, families can swim in the wave pool, launch a boat, or fish surrounding waters for bass, catfish, bream, perch, redfish, and trout. History travelers can reach the Chalmette Battlefield and the French Quarter Visitor Center of Jean Lafitte in under an hour, and admission to all park sites is free. Kids can pick up Junior Ranger booklets at any visitor center.

Southeast Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and long, hot summers. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with lower humidity, fewer mosquitoes, and daytime highs in the 70s. Wildflowers and migrating birds are active in the Barataria Preserve during these months, and New Orleans festivals drive heavy campground demand. Summer is hot and wet. Daytime highs regularly climb into the 90s from June through September, overnight temperatures often stay near or above 75, and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in late August and September, and the southeast Louisiana coast is one of the most exposed stretches in the country. Winter camping is popular with snowbirds. Days are usually mild, though occasional cold fronts drop overnight lows near freezing. Mardi Gras, typically in February, fills area campgrounds well in advance, and nearby state park sites often sell out months ahead for that weekend.

Expect flat, low-lying terrain with heavy tree cover, humidity, and abundant wildlife. Alligators, snakes, and mosquitoes are part of the ecosystem, especially in warm months. Insect repellent, screened outdoor space, and closed food storage are essentials. Sites at the nearby state parks are level with water and electric, though full sewer hookups are not standard at every site. Bayou Segnette's campsites include water and electrical hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills, with a shared dump station, free laundry, and bathhouses on site. Big rigs should confirm site length in advance, as some loops accommodate rigs up to about 50 feet. Cell coverage is generally good on the West Bank but can weaken deeper into the swamp. Roads into Lafitte are narrow two-lane highways along the levee. Plan drives during daylight and watch for wildlife at dusk.
