Camping near Lakeview, Louisiana
Lakeview is a small unincorporated community in Caddo Parish on the north shore of Cross Lake, a short drive northwest of downtown Shreveport. Its position makes it a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Shreveport-Bossier area, Cross Lake itself, and the cypress bayous of Caddo Lake to the west. Sites in the immediate area lean toward private RV parks rather than large public campgrounds.
Closest options include the Shreveport / Bossier City KOA Journey and C & J RV Park, both convenient to Interstate 20 and city amenities. Country Haven RV Park offers a quieter, rural feel, while Shreveport North / Caddo Lake Area KOA sits closer to the Louisiana-Texas line and the Caddo Lake ecosystem. God's Country Mountain View Campground rounds out the nearby options for travelers willing to drive a bit farther.
Expect flat terrain, pine and hardwood forest, and easy access to lakes rather than mountains. Full-hookup pull-throughs are common at private parks in the area, and most sites stay open year-round.
Things to do near Lakeview
Cross Lake is the main draw. The 8,575-acre reservoir sits on the doorstep of Lakeview and supports largemouth and spotted bass, crappie, catfish, and bream, with public boat ramps and shoreline access. A city boating permit is required for all motorized and non-motorized craft and is issued by the Cross Lake Patrol Office on Municipal Pier Road. Swimming is generally not advised due to seasonal algal blooms.
West of Lakeview, Caddo Lake and its cypress-tupelo wetlands offer paddling, guided swamp tours, and wildlife viewing including alligators and waterfowl. Downtown Shreveport and Bossier City add casinos, riverfront attractions, the R.W. Norton Art Gallery, and the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, giving families rain-day and evening options within a short drive.

Shreveport sits in a humid subtropical zone with hot, humid summers and short, mild winters. Rain is possible in every month, with the wettest stretch typically running from late winter into spring. April and May see frequent thunderstorms, and severe weather including tornadoes is a real risk in spring; RV travelers should monitor forecasts and know where the campground shelter is located.
Summer brings consistent heat with highs commonly in the low 90s and heat indices well above that. Full-hookup sites with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing for reliable air conditioning. Afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually brief.
Fall is the most comfortable season for RV camping. September through November brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and fewer bugs, though early September can still be hot. Winter is short and generally mild, with occasional cold snaps and rare freezing rain or light snow. Measurable snow is uncommon, so most private parks stay open through the winter months.
How to book
Private parks near Lakeview, including the Shreveport / Bossier City KOA Journey, C & J RV Park, Country Haven RV Park, and Shreveport North / Caddo Lake Area KOA, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA properties can also be booked through the KOA app. For holiday weekends and major Shreveport-Bossier events, book several weeks ahead.
Louisiana state parks in the wider region, such as Lake Bistineau State Park southeast of Shreveport and Lake Claiborne State Park to the northeast, use the Louisiana State Parks central reservation system. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance and can be made up to 13 months to the day in advance online or by calling the reservation center; reservations within the 48-hour window are handled by contacting the park directly.
Caddo Lake State Park on the Texas side uses the Texas State Parks reservation system, with reservations available up to five months in advance.
What to expect on arrival
Terrain around Lakeview is flat, wooded, and low-elevation, so leveling is straightforward at most private parks. Sites are typically gravel or grass, shaded by pine and hardwood, and cell coverage is generally reliable given the proximity to Shreveport.
Mosquitoes and biting flies are persistent from late spring through early fall, especially near Cross Lake and Caddo Lake; bring repellent and consider a screen room. Alligators live in local waters, so keep pets leashed near shorelines and do not let children swim in unmarked areas. Fire ants are common in grassy sites.
Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are easy to find in Shreveport and Bossier City. Louisiana State Parks require pets to be on a leash no more than 6 feet in length, caged or crated, and quiet hours are enforced at state park campgrounds.
