Campgrounds and RV parks near Monroe, LA

Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge sits within Monroe's city limits and is the standout outdoor stop for RV families. The refuge features a cypress-studded lake with nature trails and boardwalks, a wildlife pier, a visitor center in a restored planter's house, canoe access, and live animal exhibits at the conservation learning center. Fishing includes bait casting for largemouth bass, jigs or shiners for crappie, and cane pole fishing for bream, with boat motors restricted to 50 hp or less. In town, the Louisiana Purchase Gardens & Zoo, the Biedenharn Museum & Gardens, and riverfront paths along the Ouachita fill an easy half-day. Kids-focused stops include the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum and the Northeast Louisiana Children's Museum. Poverty Point World Heritage Site, a collection of prehistoric Native American earthworks dating back roughly 3,400 years, is an easy day trip east on I-20, reached by exiting at Delhi and heading north toward Epps.

Monroe has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, cool winters, rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year, and little annual snowfall. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. The best time to visit is generally from mid-March to mid-May and mid-October to mid-November, when daytime temperatures are mild and humidity is manageable. Summer brings long, oppressive heat. The air can feel uncomfortably humid during the summer months from June to September, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. RVers should plan for full hookups with strong air conditioning and shaded sites where possible. Peak family-travel weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day book earliest at nearby state parks. Winter is short and generally mild but wet. Freezing nights occur, though hard freezes are uncommon. April is the wettest month on average, with rainfall totals near 5 inches, so check bayou levels before booking waterfront sites in early spring.

Expect flat, wooded, bayou-country sites with full hookups at most private parks near the interstate. Pull-through sites and 50/30-amp service are widely available, and several parks lean toward long-term guests, so short-stay RVers should confirm nightly availability and site width for larger rigs. Cell coverage is generally strong close to Monroe and West Monroe and drops off in the rural refuges and state park areas. At Chemin-A-Haut State Park, campers get a mix of RV sites and cabins on a bluff over Bayou Bartholomew. The park's swimming pool is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, so campers and picnickers can cool off on hot summer days. Bring bug spray year-round for bayou stops, and expect mosquitoes and biting flies from late spring through early fall.
