Campgrounds near Oakdale, Louisiana
Oakdale sits in Allen Parish in central Louisiana, surrounded by longleaf pine country and within reach of the Calcasieu Ranger District of Kisatchie National Forest. Kisatchie is the only national forest in Louisiana, and its holdings are divided among ranger districts across central and northern Louisiana. That mix of national forest, state park, and private RV resorts gives visitors a range of options within a short drive of town.
Close-in choices include Rustic Sky Horse Camp for equestrian-friendly stays, 3 Oaks RV Park, and Lakeview RV Park. To the south near Kinder, Coushatta Casino Luxury RV Resort At Red Shoes Park pairs full hookups with casino amenities. To the east near Ville Platte, South Landing Chicot State Park anchors a large public lake with a full trail system.
Chicot State Park covers over 6,400 acres of rolling hills and water in south-central Louisiana, and Lake Chicot has yielded record freshwater catches of largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and red-ear sunfish. Together, these campgrounds cover most trip styles: fishing, riding, family basecamps, and casino weekends.
Things to do near Oakdale
Fishing and paddling drive most itineraries. Chicot State Park has a boathouse, three boat launches, and boat rental facilities, and Lake Chicot holds bass, crappie, and bream year-round. An extensive hiking and backpacking trail completely encircles Lake Chicot and includes several primitive campsites along the way, letting visitors experience the park's bottomland hardwood forest and the lake itself.
Inside the park boundary, the Louisiana State Arboretum features a mature beech-magnolia forest, an outdoor classroom, and several miles of nature trails with labeled native plants. Kids gravitate to the water playground at South Landing.
Farther afield, Kisatchie National Forest has more than 40 developed recreation sites and over 400 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and ATV use, including over 230 miles of equestrian trails. Coushatta Casino, near the Kinder resort, adds gaming and dining.

Central Louisiana is humid subtropical, so timing matters more than in drier regions. Spring, roughly March through May, brings mild temperatures, wildflowers along Kisatchie's longleaf ridges, and strong fishing on Lake Chicot. Expect heavy thunderstorm days, particularly in April and May. Book early: spring weekends fill fast at state park sites.
Summer is hot, humid, and stormy. Mornings on the water are best, with afternoons reserved for shade or the water playground at South Landing. Biting insects are constant near bottomland forest, so screens and repellent are essentials. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks in August and September, occasionally forcing closures or evacuations across the region.
Fall brings the most comfortable stretch, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and steady bass fishing. Winter is mild but wet, with occasional freezes; most private RV parks stay open, and Chicot State Park is open year round. Deer and small-game seasons in Kisatchie affect trail activity from October through January.
How to book campgrounds near Oakdale
Louisiana State Parks, including Chicot, use the state's central Go Outdoors Louisiana reservation system, which replaced the older Reserve America portal. Reservations can be created up to 13 months in advance online, and campsite reservations require the first night's use fee deposit within 10 days or the booking is cancelled. Cabins, lodges, and group sites must be paid in full within 30 days of booking when reserved 10 or more months out.
All visitors to Chicot must enter through the South Landing main entrance on LA-3042; some campground roads are narrow, steep, and hilly, especially in South Landing, which can be tricky for large trailers.
Private parks such as Coushatta Casino Luxury RV Resort At Red Shoes Park, 3 Oaks RV Park, Lakeview RV Park, and Rustic Sky Horse Camp book directly through their own websites or by phone. Reserve holiday weekends several months out.
What to expect on-site
Expect pine shade, sandy soil, and mixed pavement or gravel pads. Full hookups are standard at private parks such as Coushatta Casino Luxury RV Resort At Red Shoes Park, 3 Oaks RV Park, and Lakeview RV Park. At Chicot, sites are water and electric only, with a dump station on-site. The South Landing supplies 50-amp service, while the North Landing offers 30-amp service and a laundry facility.
Site length varies. South Landing lists a maximum of around 60 feet, and larger rigs should confirm turn radii and low-hanging branches before booking a specific loop. Rustic Sky Horse Camp is oriented toward equestrian setups.
Pets are not allowed inside any buildings, cabins, or lodges at Chicot, though the campsites themselves are pet-friendly. Cell coverage is usable in town and along US-165 but patchy inside the national forest.
