Campgrounds and RV parks near Simpson, LA

The Vernon Unit of Kisatchie National Forest is the main recreation draw. Fullerton Lake Recreation Complex includes the 1.6-mile Fullerton Mill Trail, which passes ruins of a former sawmill town listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Little Cypress Recreation Complex features a 3-acre spring-fed pond and the fully accessible half-mile Ol' Sarge Interpretive Trail, which works well for families. Wolf Rock Cave, the only known rock shelter in Louisiana used by early people and dating to the Late Archaic period, is also within the Vernon Unit. Fishing and non-motorized boating are permitted at Fullerton Lake. Four off-highway vehicle trail systems run through Kisatchie, and horseback riders can stage from Rustic Sky Horse Camp. Louisiana Mudfest Recreational Park hosts organized off-road events.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Simpson. From March through May, wild azaleas and dogwoods bloom across the Kisatchie forest floor, and daytime highs sit in a comfortable range before humidity peaks. October is often one of the drier, cooler stretches of fall, though single-month rainfall can spike sharply when tropical systems track inland from the Gulf. Summer runs long, hot, and humid. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August, and heat indices routinely push past 100 degrees. Shade at forest campgrounds helps, but hookups with reliable power for air conditioning become important. Louisiana lies in the Atlantic hurricane basin, so travelers should monitor forecasts from June through November and be ready to reroute. Winters are short and mild. Freezes occur but rarely last long, and many private RV parks stay open year-round. Hunting seasons run through fall and winter on Kisatchie, so campers should check Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries regulations and wear blaze orange on forest trails.

Expect flat to gently rolling pine country. Roads leading to Kisatchie recreation sites are generally paved or well-graded gravel, but the last miles to primitive forest camps can turn rough after heavy rain. Off-highway vehicle trails may close following excessive rainfall, so calling the Forest Service OHV hotline before towing in is recommended. Hookups vary widely. Private RV parks around Simpson and Leesville typically offer full water, sewer, and electric service. Forest Service sites in the Vernon Unit lean primitive, with vault or flush toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and few or no hookups. Cell coverage is patchy inside the forest, so download maps in advance. Biting insects, ticks, and the occasional venomous snake are part of the ecosystem. Bring repellent, keep food secured, and check pets after hikes.
