Campgrounds and RV parks near Start, LA

Fishing is the dominant activity. The Ouachita River, Boeuf River, Bayou Macon, and nearby oxbow lakes hold bass, crappie, catfish, and bream, and several of the local RV parks cater specifically to anglers. The Fishing Camp Tackle & RV Park is oriented around that use, with tackle on site. For day trips, Poverty Point World Heritage Site sits east of Start and preserves prehistoric earthworks dating to roughly 1700 to 1100 BCE. Chemin-A-Haut State Park to the north near Bastrop offers a seasonal swimming pool, hiking trails, and paddling on Bayou Bartholomew. Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge, just north of Monroe, has a boardwalk and paddling access. Monroe adds the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens, and youth-tournament facilities near Ouachita Sportsplex.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in Richland Parish. From mid-March through May, daytime highs typically climb from the upper sixties into the low eighties, and crappie fishing peaks on the Ouachita system. April is historically the wettest month at the Monroe climate station, so expect thunderstorms and check river gauges before launching a boat. Summer is hot and humid. Highs climb into the low nineties from June through August, heat indices frequently exceed one hundred, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Mosquitoes are heavy near the bayous, and shaded sites and reliable air conditioning matter. Tropical remnants from the Gulf can push heavy rain this far inland from June through November. Winter is mild but wet. Highs average in the upper fifties with overnight lows in the mid-thirties, and hard freezes occur several times each season. Waterfowl and deer seasons draw hunters, and many private parks stay open year-round with reduced amenities.

The terrain around Start is flat, agricultural, and easy to tow through. I-20 provides direct access from Shreveport, Monroe, Vicksburg, and Jackson, and U.S. 80 and LA 15 handle local traffic. Fuel and diesel are readily available in Rayville and along the interstate exits, and Monroe has the closest major RV service and parts. Sites at nearby parks are generally gravel or grass pads with thirty and fifty amp service. Cell coverage is reliable on the main carriers along I-20 but can weaken on backroads toward the Boeuf River. Big-rig access is usually straightforward, though a few older fishing-oriented parks have tighter interior roads. Bring insect repellent, a surge protector for summer storm season, and a sewer support if staying long term.
