Campgrounds and RV parks near Urania, LA

Fishing is the headline activity. Caney Lake, at Jimmie Davis State Park, is a prime freshwater fishing spot with two boat launches and a fishing pier. As of 2016, the largest red ear sunfish and largemouth bass ever caught in Louisiana came from the reservoir. Waterskiing is another way to enjoy the clear waters of the lake. On land, the park works as a starting point for biking treks through the hills of north Louisiana, and its wooded land and lakefront draw nature lovers. A playground gives kids a place to burn energy after a day on the lake. For off-road recreation, Louisiana Mudfest Recreational Park hosts trail riding and organized mud events. Kisatchie National Forest, west of Urania, adds hiking, hunting, and scenic drives.

Central Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate. The area sees hot summers and cool winters with strong seasonal temperature contrasts, and high annual precipitation spread fairly evenly throughout the year. Winters bring cool days and occasional freezes, but hard snow is rare and campgrounds stay open. The campground at Jimmie Davis State Park is a year-round, pet-friendly facility with 73 campsites. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel, cool enough for comfortable exploration yet warm enough for outdoor activities. Spring also brings thunderstorms and higher water in bayous and reservoirs. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Park staff recommend reservations at Jimmie Davis State Park, especially from April to September. Late summer through fall overlaps with the Atlantic hurricane season, and remnants of Gulf storms can push heavy rain and wind into central Louisiana, so travelers should watch forecasts closely.

Sites in the area range from basic gravel pads to full-hookup pull-throughs. The park has 73 camping sites, and each site is equipped with a table, tent pad, and a fire ring. Jimmie Davis State Park also provides paved campsites, deluxe cabins, lodges, group camp dorms, a swimming beach with splash pad and playground, and fishing pier. Roads inside the park are paved and generally big-rig friendly. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the piney woods, so travelers relying on data for navigation or work should download maps ahead of arrival. Approach roads are largely rural and can be dark, narrow, and winding, so drivers should take their time and stay alert. Gates close at night at the state park, so plan arrivals during posted hours.
