Campgrounds near Westlake, Louisiana
Westlake sits on the west bank of the Calcasieu River across from Lake Charles in southwest Louisiana, with direct access from Interstate 10 and about an hour from the Gulf coast. The area works well as an RV base for Cajun country, casino trips, and paddling on the Calcasieu system. Big-rig access is straightforward from I-10 exits at Westlake and Sulphur.
The closest RV options cluster along the river corridor. Whispering Meadow RV Park and Paradise RV Park II sit within a short drive of the city, and Twelve Oaks RV Park serves travellers looking for a quieter setting outside the industrial belt. Isle of Capri Casino Hotel Lake Charles, located in Westlake on the west shore of the lake, offers an on-site RV park with electric sites for guests combining a stay with gaming.
For a state-park experience, Sam Houston Jones State Park protects a 1,087-acre tract of tree-filled lagoons and mixed pine and hardwood forest a short drive north of Westlake, and is the most established public campground in the area.
Things to do near Westlake
Water dominates the recreation menu. The numerous waterways in this area make water sports a natural highlight at Sam Houston Jones State Park, and two boat launches on the West Fork of the Calcasieu River provide access toward Calcasieu Lake about 20 miles away. Bank and lagoon fishing, kayaking, and canoeing are all easy from the state park.
Hiking trails wind through the park, including an old stagecoach road along the banks of tributaries to the Calcasieu. The park sits just north of the most productive birding region of Louisiana, with nearly 200 species seen at or within 30 miles of the site.
In town, the Lake Charles lakefront and the Isle of Capri Casino Hotel Lake Charles offer dining, gaming, and events. Day trips reach Creole Nature Trail marshes and Gulf beaches within an hour.

Southwest Louisiana has a long, humid warm season and a short mild winter. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable camping weather, with cooler nights and lower humidity than midsummer. Migrating songbirds move through in April and again in October.
Summers are hot and wet. The greatest amount of monthly precipitation occurs in June, averaging roughly 136 mm, and afternoon thunderstorms are routine through August. Mosquitoes can be heavy near the lagoons, especially after rain. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from August into October; past storms including Hurricane Laura have forced evacuations and temporary closures at coastal and near-coastal parks, so travellers should monitor the National Hurricane Center before and during a trip.
Winter is generally mild and rarely freezes hard, but cold fronts bring rain and short cold snaps. Sam Houston Jones State Park is open year round, and most private RV parks in the Westlake and Lake Charles area operate year round as well.
How to book
Louisiana state park sites use the state's central reservation system, operated through Reserve America and the go-outdoors-Louisiana portal. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance, and a maximum stay of 15 consecutive days is allowed in the park. Cabins and the lodge at Sam Houston Jones State Park book out well ahead for weekends and holidays, so travellers should reserve as early as possible.
Private parks near Westlake, including Whispering Meadow RV Park, Paradise RV Park II, and Twelve Oaks RV Park, typically take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Isle of Capri Casino Hotel Lake Charles handles RV space through the casino property.
Weekends around Mardi Gras, spring festivals, and major casino events fill the fastest. For summer holidays and fall hurricane-season weekends, booking four to eight weeks out is prudent, and travellers should confirm cancellation windows in case a storm forces a change.
What to expect on site
Expect flat, wooded, often lagoon-adjacent sites. Sam Houston Jones State Park offers RV sites with full hookups next to tree-filled lagoons, plus a dump station, drinking water, flush toilets, and hot showers. Sites accept rigs up to 50 feet, and pull-through options are available. Cabins and a lodge are also available on the property.
Alligators, deer, snakes, and abundant birdlife live in and around the lagoons, so pets should be leashed and food secured. Humidity is high most of the year; awnings, bug screens, and strong air conditioning matter more than heaters.
Cell service is generally reliable across Westlake and along I-10. Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are easy to find in Westlake, Sulphur, and Lake Charles.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Westlake, LA?
RV rental in Westlake is one of the more affordable ways to explore Southwest Louisiana. On RVezy you can typically expect travel trailers from around $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes from about $175 to $260, and larger Class A motorhomes from roughly $225 to $375 per night, depending on age, size, and season. Booking midweek and avoiding Mardi Gras season in nearby Lake Charles can drop nightly rates noticeably. Pro tip: filter for cheap RV rental Westlake options with Instant Book to lock in the best deals fast, and message hosts about weekly discounts if your Louisiana road trip stretches past five nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Westlake%2C%20LouisianaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Westlake, Louisiana?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Westlake. Louisiana does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every RV listed on RVezy, from compact campervans to spacious Class A motorhomes. To book on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older and meet approved driver requirements, which RVezy verifies during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring your valid home-country license and an International Driving Permit before your Louisiana road trip toward the Creole Nature Trail.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance come with my Westlake RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book an RV rental in Westlake. Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Interstate 10, a dead battery at Sam Houston Jones State Park, or a lockout at a local RV park is handled with one phone call. During checkout you choose your protection level, which helps cover physical damage to the RV and gives real peace of mind, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Protection plans are not standard auto insurance, but they are designed so one mishap doesn't derail your Louisiana adventure. Book with confidence and focus on the bayou views.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Westlake RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy makes that easy to handle. RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every booking, including a money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your Westlake dates with confidence. If a hurricane or tropical storm threatens the Gulf Coast during the June 1 to November 30 Atlantic hurricane season, RVezy support can help you work through your options. Hosts do not set their own cancellation rules, so you get the same fair process whether you rent in Westlake, Lake Charles, or anywhere else. Reach out to RVezy support anytime if life throws you a curveball.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Westlake RV rental?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Westlake is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of hosts who welcome dogs, often for a small cleaning fee. Sam Houston Jones State Park, just minutes from Westlake on the Calcasieu River, allows leashed pets on its trails and at campsites, and the wide-open boardwalks are perfect for sniffing out alligators (from a safe distance). The Creole Nature Trail's Sabine National Wildlife Refuge also welcomes leashed pups. Pro tip: pack a paw-safe cooling mat, since Louisiana summer pavement can heat up fast even in the shoulder months.
fws.gov/refuge/sabineCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Westlake?
Yes, RV delivery in Westlake is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many hosts will drive the RV to Sam Houston Jones State Park, Whispering Meadow RV Park on Westwood Road, or even your driveway, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through the systems before they leave. Just use the Delivery filter when you search, then message the host with your campsite number and arrival time. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location. It's the easiest way to enjoy a motorhome rental in Westlake without ever having to drive the rig yourself.
lastateparks.com/parks/sam-houston-jones-state-parkHow far can I drive on a Westlake RV rental, and what about mileage fees?
You've got real range from Westlake. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, and many offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for a longer Louisiana loop. From Westlake you can easily reach New Orleans (about 215 miles east on I-10), Houston (about 140 miles west), Lafayette (about 75 miles east), Avery Island and the Tabasco factory (about 100 miles), or Big Bend country in Texas if you've got a week. Check the listing's mileage details before booking, and message the host if your planned route exceeds the included miles to lock in a flat rate upfront.
dotd.la.gov/Where can I camp with my RV near Westlake, LA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Westlake. Top picks include Sam Houston Jones State Park, a 1,087-acre park of cypress lagoons with improved sites about 10 minutes from town, and Whispering Meadow RV Park on Westwood Road with big-rig friendly sites featuring 20/30/50 amp service and pull-throughs. Hidden Ponds RV Park, about 12 miles out, offers stocked fishing ponds and a quiet setting, and several private parks in nearby Sulphur and Lake Charles add more full-hookup options. Pro tip: Sam Houston Jones books up fast on weekends, so reserve through the official Louisiana State Parks system at least a month ahead, especially around spring crawfish season.
lastateparks.com/parks/sam-houston-jones-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for a Westlake RV trip?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. From mid-October through early December and again from March through May, daytime highs hover in the comfortable 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range, humidity drops, and mosquitoes ease up, which is huge near the cypress lagoons. Summer (June to September) brings 90-plus degree heat with thick humidity and is also peak Atlantic hurricane season, so build flexibility into your plans. Winters are short and mild with highs often in the 60s, making December through February surprisingly pleasant for an RV road trip from Westlake. Insider tip: visit in late April for Westlake's proximity to the Lake Charles Crawfish Festival just across the river.
weather.gov/lch/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Westlake?
You'll do great, and you're not alone. Most renters in Westlake are first-timers, and every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, water systems, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures. Westlake itself is easy to navigate: wide roads, light traffic compared to Houston or New Orleans, and quick access to Interstate 10. Stick to a Class C motorhome or campervan if you want extra confidence, or book delivery so the host parks and sets up at your campsite. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop around the parking lot at L'Auberge or the Westlake Walmart before heading out to get a feel for the size.
dotd.la.gov/What happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never stranded. Every RV rental in Westlake on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a tire issue on I-10 near the Calcasieu River bridge, an overheating engine outside DeRidder, or a battery problem at a remote campground connects you with a real person fast. They can dispatch a tow, mobile mechanic, or tire service to your location. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app for quick how-to questions, like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. Save the roadside number to your phone before pickup and you're covered for whatever Louisiana throws at you.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Westlake RV rental across state lines or to Mexico?
Cross-state travel is wide open. Most RVezy hosts in Westlake allow you to take the RV anywhere in the continental United States, so a road trip to Galveston beaches, the Texas Hill Country, the Florida Panhandle, or up to the Ozarks is totally on the table. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend across that border. Heading to Canada may be allowed with host approval; just message them through the listing before you book to confirm. Popular RV road trips from Westlake include I-10 east to New Orleans (215 miles), west to San Antonio (430 miles), and north to Hot Springs, Arkansas (425 miles).
cbp.gov/travelHow much should I budget for fuel on a Westlake RV trip?
Louisiana is one of the cheaper fuel states in the country, which is a real win for your budget. Expect Class B campervans to get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes around 8-12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs 6-10 MPG. With gas typically running below the national average at stations along I-10 in Westlake and Sulphur, a 500-mile weekend in a Class C usually lands in the $150 to $225 fuel range. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's near exit 4 or exit 27 off I-10 before heading into the Creole Nature Trail, where stations get scarce once you pass Hackberry.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Westlake?
For Sam Houston Jones State Park, book 1 to 3 months ahead, especially for weekends from March through May and in October. Reservations go through the official Louisiana State Parks system at reserve.lastateparks.com, with advance booking windows and stay-length limits set by the park. Private parks like Whispering Meadow are usually easier to grab on shorter notice, often within a week. For festival weekends in Lake Charles, including Mardi Gras and major spring events, lock things in 2 to 3 months out. Pro tip: weekday arrivals on Sunday or Monday almost always have availability, even last-minute.
lastateparks.com/parks/sam-houston-jones-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like in and around Westlake?
Driving in Westlake is refreshingly relaxed. Interstate 10 is the main artery and stays mostly flat with light-to-moderate traffic outside of rush hour on the Calcasieu River bridge, which can back up at 4 to 6 pm on weekdays. Watch for sudden afternoon thunderstorms from May through September, which can drop visibility fast, and stay alert during hurricane season for evacuation advisories. The terrain is pancake-flat, so no mountain grades to worry about. Avoid downtown Lake Charles during festivals if you're in a big rig; instead, park at your campground and Uber over. The Creole Nature Trail south of town has narrow shoulders, so take it slow and enjoy the alligator sightings.
511la.org/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Westlake?
You'll find solid hookups close to town. Whispering Meadow RV Park offers full hookups with 20/30/50 amp service, pull-throughs, laundry, propane, WiFi, and a dump station. Sam Houston Jones State Park has improved sites with water and electricity, a dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets, plus a fishing boardwalk along the lagoons. Most private parks in the Westlake area provide potable water fills and dump access, and several Pilot and Love's truck stops on I-10 offer dump stations and freshwater fills for travelers passing through. Insider tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter; older state park sites occasionally need both.
lastateparks.com/parks/sam-houston-jones-state-parkWhat's typically included inside a Westlake RV rental?
More than you'd expect. Most RVs on RVezy in Westlake come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinettes (so families of 4-6 sleep comfortably), a kitchen with a fridge, stove, microwave, sink, a wet or dry bathroom with a shower and toilet, air conditioning (essential in Louisiana summers), heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, generator for boondocking, outdoor speakers, and basic kitchenware. WiFi varies by host; cell signal is generally strong on Verizon and AT&T around Westlake. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and check the photos for kitchen layout to make sure the rig fits your family's style for the Louisiana RV trip.
fcc.gov/general/broadband-mapWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Westlake RV?
Lots of helpful extras to customize your trip. Popular Westlake host add-ons include linens and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables, propane fills, generator hours for boondocking, bike racks, kayak racks (great for the Calcasieu River), and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Westlake or Lake Charles, with delivery available to Sam Houston Jones State Park, Whispering Meadow, or other local campgrounds for a mileage-based fee. One-way rentals between cities like Houston or New Orleans may be possible; just message the host directly from the listing to ask. Each listing clearly shows the mileage policy and dropoff window before you book.
visitlakecharles.org/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay online when you book using a credit card, and your trip total breaks down clearly into nightly rate, mileage, generator hours, add-ons, protection, and any host fees, so there are no surprises. A security deposit is placed as a separate temporary hold on your card before pickup, with the amount based on the protection plan you choose. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with the expected fuel, propane, and tank status, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: snap a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff in Westlake. It takes 60 seconds and is the easiest way to keep your deposit drama-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle Louisiana's heat and hurricane season in an RV?
With a little prep, summer in Westlake is totally doable. Every RVezy rental in Louisiana comes with air conditioning, but A/C runs hard when temps hit the 90s, so plan to stay plugged into 30 or 50 amp shore power at full-hookup parks like Whispering Meadow during the hottest stretches. Drive early in the morning to avoid afternoon thunderstorms and overheating risk. During hurricane season (June 1 through November 30), check the National Hurricane Center daily and have a flexible route in mind heading north or east. Insider tip: shoulder seasons (March-May and October-November) give you the same bayou magic with half the heat and bugs, and they're the smart-money move for any family RV trip Westlake adventure.
