Campgrounds and RV parks near Calais, ME

The St. Croix International Historic Site marks the location of a 1604 French settlement and is jointly managed by the United States and Canada. Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, immediately west of town, has gravel roads, hiking loops, and freshwater ponds that draw birders and families with kids on bikes. Water activity is central to the trip. Kayaking, tide-pooling, and shoreline walks are common along Cobscook Bay, where the tide swing is among the largest on the U.S. East Coast. Freshwater lakes in the surrounding towns offer swimming and boat launches. Cross-border day trips are easy for RVers with passports. St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, whale-watching charters, and the Ministers Island tidal causeway are all within a short drive on the New Brunswick side.

The practical RV camping window in the Calais area runs from mid-May through mid-October. Cobscook Bay State Park opens for the season on May 15 and takes online reservations through mid-September, then shifts to first-come, first-served until closing in mid-October. Most private campgrounds on both sides of the border follow a similar early-May to October calendar, with Oak Bay Campground and the Kiwanis park in St. Andrews opening as early as the first week of May. July and August are the peak booking months, with warm days, long daylight, and the driest weather of the year. June brings blackflies inland but excellent birding at Moosehorn and Cobscook Bay, both of which sit on a major migratory flyway. September delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and reliable fall color into early October. Winter is long and snowy, with an annual snowfall average near 77 inches. Nearly all private campgrounds close by late October, and services along Route 1 thin out considerably. Winter camping at Cobscook Bay State Park is available only by prior arrangement with park staff.

Sites in this region vary widely. Private parks near Calais and around Passamaquoddy Bay typically offer full or partial hookups, dump stations, showers, laundry, and small camp stores. Cobscook Bay State Park sites are more rustic and have no RV hookups, but the park now has a new bathhouse with drinking water, flush toilets, and hot showers, plus a dump station on-site. RVers should plan for uneven terrain and coastal wind. Some waterfront sites slope toward the bay and benefit from levelling blocks, and afternoon gusts off the water can pick up quickly. Cell service is generally reliable in Calais itself and along Route 1, but drops off inside Moosehorn and at some Cobscook Bay sites. Cross-border travelers should expect roaming charges unless a Canadian plan is added in advance.
