Campgrounds near Damariscotta, Maine
Damariscotta sits on the tidal Damariscotta River in Maine's Midcoast region, roughly an hour and a half northeast of Portland via U.S. Route 1. The town serves as a hub for the Pemaquid peninsula, and most nearby RV campgrounds cluster around Pemaquid Lake, the Pemaquid peninsula, or the Boothbay peninsula to the west.
Lakefront options include Lake Pemaquid Camping and Duck Puddle Campgrounds, both on the shores of seven-mile-long Pemaquid Lake in Nobleboro. Closer to the ocean, Sherwood Forest CampSite and Pemaquid Point Campground put RVers within a short drive of Pemaquid Beach and Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in New Harbor. Shore Hills Campground and RV Park lies on the Boothbay peninsula about four miles from downtown Boothbay Harbor.
Most private campgrounds in the area accommodate large rigs, with 30- and 50-amp service common at the larger parks, and typical amenities include camp stores, dump stations, and laundry.
Things to do near Damariscotta
Pemaquid Point Lighthouse anchors the peninsula and appears on the Maine state quarter. Nearby, Fort William Henry at the Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site preserves a reconstructed colonial-era fort and archaeology exhibits, and Pemaquid Beach offers one of the few sandy saltwater beaches on this stretch of the Midcoast.
On the water, Pemaquid Lake supports swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and warm-water fishing. Boothbay Harbor, about twenty minutes south of Damariscotta, runs puffin and seal cruises and hosts the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, which has RV-accessible parking at the back of its main lot.
Onshore, the Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust maintains hiking preserves across the peninsula, including La Verna Preserve and the Whaleback Shell Midden State Historic Site just outside Damariscotta village.

The camping season on the Midcoast is short and concentrated. Lake Pemaquid Camping typically operates from late May through September, Duck Puddle Campgrounds runs early May through late October, Sherwood Forest CampSite opens in mid-May and runs into late October, and Shore Hills Campground and RV Park is generally open early May through Columbus Day weekend. Almost no private campgrounds in the area stay open year-round.
July and August are peak season, and popular sites on the water fill early. Weekly Saturday-to-Saturday bookings are common at Lake Pemaquid Camping for waterfront and lakeside sites during those two months. Late June and early September remain warm enough for lake swimming while being noticeably quieter.
Spring arrivals should expect cool nights and black flies in the woods, and ice-out on Damariscotta Lake has trended earlier in recent decades. October brings foliage and cold overnight lows; by November most campgrounds have closed for the season.

Overall I enjoyed renting out this van. It offered a comfortable north-south bed orientation for two people, plenty of bed room. The heating system worked well and the van conversion was great too.

We had a great experience with Jeff's van. When he says that you can venture into places other campers and vans can only dream of he isn't kidding. We used the van for a video production project in the North Maine Woods and traveled down logging roads and offshoots with no problem. There was plenty of power, USB and outlets for us to charge batteries, phones and watches which was critical. Pickup was a breeze. The van is very well equipped and stocked. I can tell you from personal experience that the mattress for the lower sleeping area is surprisingly comfortable. We didn't want for anything during our stay!

Shiko was a great host. I had a couple questions and he answered them immediately. I recommend Shiko to anyone looking for an RV to rent.

How to book campgrounds near Damariscotta
The campgrounds around Damariscotta are privately owned, so reservations go directly through each operator by phone or the operator's website, not through a central park-service system. Deposits are standard: Duck Puddle Campgrounds requires roughly a 50 percent deposit at time of booking, and other operators generally take a smaller flat deposit to hold a site.
For July and August travel, book several months out; waterfront sites on Pemaquid Lake and premium sites near Boothbay Harbor go first. Weekly Saturday-to-Saturday reservations are the norm for waterfront and lakeside sites at Lake Pemaquid Camping in mid-summer, and cabins at Sherwood Forest CampSite carry a two-night minimum.
Check-in times typically fall in the early afternoon and check-out in the late morning. Confirm rig length, amperage, and pet policies with the campground before paying a deposit.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area lean traditional and wooded rather than resort-style. Lake Pemaquid Camping is the largest option nearby with more than 200 sites, a sandy lake beach, a marina, a swimming pool, and a snack bar. It runs busy and family-oriented in mid-summer.
Duck Puddle Campgrounds and Shore Hills Campground and RV Park are mid-sized, with a mix of waterfront, water-view, and wooded sites and a significant share of seasonal campers. Sherwood Forest CampSite and Pemaquid Point Campground are smaller, quieter, and closer to the ocean, better suited to travelers focused on the lighthouse, beach, and hiking preserves than on-site activities.
Cell coverage on the peninsula is uneven. Most campgrounds offer Wi-Fi near the office, but strong signal at every site is not a given.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Damariscotta%2C%20MaineWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Damariscotta?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Damariscotta, with no special endorsement or commercial license required in Maine, even for larger Class A motorhomes. Approved RVezy renters are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from outside the US or Canada? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto association before you travel. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward the process is: you book, verify, and you're set for your Maine RV trip.

Yes, every RVezy booking includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 1 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle and provides significant financial protection during your trip. During checkout, you'll choose from different coverage levels based on how much extra peace of mind you want: this is your choice as the guest, not the host's. If you get a flat near Pemaquid Point Lighthouse or need a jump start at Colonial Pemaquid, roadside help is one phone call away. It's designed to handle the bumps so your Midcoast Maine getaway stays stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Damariscotta RV rental?
You're not locked in the moment you book. RVezy has a built-in cancellation policy that gives you flexibility, including a full money-back grace period right after you reserve. Cancellation outcomes depend on how far ahead of your trip you cancel and the circumstances. Hosts don't set these rules: RVezy does, so the process is consistent no matter which listing you choose. If plans shift, contact RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options. Book your Damariscotta RV trip with confidence knowing you have a clear policy backing you up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Damariscotta?
Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental options in Damariscotta are easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see every host who welcomes furry co-pilots. Maine is one of the most dog-loving states in the country, and your pup will love it here. Pemaquid Beach Park allows leashed dogs in the off-season, and the trails at Dodge Point Public Reserved Land (just minutes from downtown Damariscotta) are leash-friendly year-round. Many local campgrounds like Lake Pemaquid Campground welcome dogs too. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees, most are happy to accommodate well-behaved dogs heading to the harbor.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Damariscotta%2C%20Maine&PetFriendly=trueCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Damariscotta?
Yes, RV delivery in Damariscotta is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip the drive entirely. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to campgrounds like Lake Pemaquid Campground, Sherwood Forest Campsite in New Harbor, or even a private driveway if you're staying with family. They'll level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system so you're not searching how things work on night one. Use the Delivery filter when searching to see who offers it. Delivery fees vary by distance, but for many guests it's worth it: you simply show up and start vacationing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Damariscotta%2C%20Maine&Delivery=trueHow far can I drive on an RV trip from Damariscotta?

Acadia National Park is about 2.5 hours northeast (roughly 110 miles), Portland is about 60 miles south (about 75 minutes), Camden and Penobscot Bay are about 45 minutes up the coast, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire are around 3 hours west. Mileage policies vary by host: some offer generous daily allowances or even unlimited mileage for longer trips. Check the listing's mileage section before booking, and if you're planning a big loop, message the host directly to discuss, many will tailor an allowance for your trip.
nps.gov/acad/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Damariscotta?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Damariscotta. Lake Pemaquid Campground in nearby Pemaquid is a longtime favorite with full hookups, a sandy beach, and pontoon rentals. Sherwood Forest Campsite in New Harbor sits near Pemaquid Beach and the lighthouse. Duck Puddle Campground in Nobleboro offers a quieter, lakeside vibe with full hookups about 15 minutes from downtown. For state park camping, Bradbury Mountain State Park is about an hour southwest. Maine's coastal campgrounds book up fast for July and August: lock in your spot by February or March if you're targeting peak summer. Shoulder season (June or September) often has same-week availability.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/index.shtmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip to Damariscotta?
Late June through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Damariscotta. July and August offer classic Maine summer weather (highs around 75 to 82°F, lows near 60°F). September is the local insider's pick: fewer crowds and cooler nights perfect for campfires, and the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest in early October draws people from across New England with its famous giant pumpkin regatta. Foliage typically peaks mid to late October. May is quieter and cooler (highs around 60 to 68°F), with blackflies in inland areas. Winters are cold and snowy, with most campgrounds closed November through April. Book early for summer or foliage weekends, they sell out months ahead.
weather.gov/gyx/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Damariscotta a good idea?
Yes, Damariscotta is a great place for your first time renting an RV. Route 1 through the Midcoast is wide, well-maintained, and far less stressful than driving in Portland or Boston, and once you reach campground country, the pace slows. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, water, waste, and driving tips before you head out. If you'd rather not drive at all, choose a host who offers delivery and setup: your motorhome rental in Damariscotta arrives ready to enjoy. Start with a travel trailer or smaller Class C for your first trip, they handle more like a large van than a bus.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my RV trip in Maine?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan. Whether you've got a flat tire on Route 1 near Wiscasset, a dead battery at Pemaquid Point, or a propane question at 10pm in your campsite, one phone call gets help dispatched to your exact location. Your host is also typically a quick message away for vehicle-specific questions, since they know their RV inside out. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave the driveway. The combination of roadside help and a responsive host is exactly why nervous first-timers end up loving the experience and booking again next summer.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Damariscotta RV rental into Canada or other states?
Cross-border and interstate trips are often possible. An RV road trip from Damariscotta into New Hampshire, Vermont, or Massachusetts is very common on RVezy, and many Maine hosts welcome it. Heading to Canada (New Brunswick and Quebec are just a few hours north)? That's allowed by some hosts depending on insurance coverage, so message the host directly from the listing page before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular routes from Damariscotta include the Maine coast up to Bar Harbor, the White Mountains loop through North Conway, and a Canadian Maritimes run via Calais. Always confirm your route with the host so you start the trip with a clear green light.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Damariscotta RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans average about 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes about 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs about 6 to 9 MPG. Maine gas prices typically run a bit above the national average. A 300-mile loop from Damariscotta to Acadia and back in a Class C will run roughly $90 to $130 in fuel at recent prices. Fill up in larger towns like Damariscotta, Rockland, or Ellsworth rather than tiny coastal villages where prices spike. Apps like GasBuddy work well across Midcoast Maine for finding the cheapest pumps along Route 1.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Damariscotta?
For peak summer (July and August) on the Maine coast, book your campsite 4 to 6 months ahead: the best waterfront spots at Lake Pemaquid Campground and oceanfront sites at Sherwood Forest go fast. Maine State Parks like Bradbury Mountain release reservations through their official reservation system, and weekends often sell out within hours of opening. For June or September trips, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually enough. If a campground says it's full, call them directly: cancellations happen often and they don't always show online right away. If you can't lock down your dream campground, RV delivery from your host to a private driveway or a less-booked inland park is a great Plan B.
campwithme.com/What are driving conditions like around Damariscotta?
Driving around Damariscotta is generally relaxed and RV-friendly. Route 1 is the main artery and handles motorhomes easily, with wide shoulders and gentle curves through the Midcoast. Summer weekend traffic does back up in Wiscasset (famous for its lobster roll lines) and around Boothbay junctions, so plan to travel before 10am or after 3pm if you can. Coastal side roads down to Pemaquid Point and New Harbor get narrow and winding, fine for travel trailers and Class C rigs, but slow your pace. Winter brings snow, ice, and frost heaves, which is why most rentals operate May through October. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially on Route 129 and Route 130 toward the peninsulas.
maine.gov/mdot/What hookups and amenities will I find at Damariscotta-area campgrounds?
Most established campgrounds near Damariscotta offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), and many also have dump stations, laundry, hot showers, and Wi-Fi at the office. Lake Pemaquid Campground has a swim beach, boat rentals, and a camp store. Sherwood Forest has pools and easy access to Pemaquid Beach. For dumping and freshwater fills, your campground will almost always have a dump station included with your stay. Arrive before dusk, those winding peninsula roads are much easier to navigate in daylight, especially backing into a site.
maine.gov/dacf/parks/index.shtmlWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Damariscotta?
You'll find more comfort than you'd expect. Most RV rentals in Damariscotta come fully equipped with real beds (queen or king in the master, plus convertible dinettes and bunks), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, and a furnace for chilly Maine nights. Many include a TV, some have Wi-Fi boosters or Starlink, and most have a generator for off-grid power. Seatbelts are provided for legal passenger capacity, check the listing for exact sleeps and seatbelt counts. Campervan rental options in Damariscotta like Class B vans are more compact but still cover the essentials. Review the listing photos carefully and message the host if you want to confirm a specific feature like an outdoor shower for rinsing off after Pemaquid Beach.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Damariscotta%2C%20MaineWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose?
Hosts in Damariscotta offer some genuinely useful add-ons to tailor your trip: kitchen kits, bedding and linens, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, kayak racks, generators, and even pre-stocked groceries. Fees are listed transparently on each listing. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in or near Damariscotta, but delivery to your campground or vacation rental is widely available, perfect if you don't want to drive an unfamiliar rig. Mileage policies vary: some hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, others offer unlimited mileage packages for longer touring. If you're planning a family RV trip from Damariscotta to Acadia, ask about a mileage bundle upfront, it's usually cheaper than paying per mile after the fact.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Damariscotta%2C%20MaineHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform when you book, with no cash or side transactions with the host. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment as a precaution against damage or excessive cleaning needs, and it's released after your trip ends, assuming everything's in good shape. Deposit amounts vary by RV class and host: you'll see the exact figure on the listing before you confirm. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick walkaround with your host at pickup, take a few photos, and return the RV reasonably clean with the tanks handled per the host's instructions. That simple routine makes the whole process smooth from booking to drop-off.
