Campgrounds and RV parks near Popham Beach, ME

Popham Beach stretches about three miles, with fine pale sand and moderate surf, and the Kennebec River outlet at the south end creates a warm, sheltered river channel popular with families alongside the cooler Atlantic surf. Lifeguards are on duty mid-June to mid-August. A beach wheelchair is available pending availability on a first come, first served basis. Fort Popham, at the northern end of the beach, is a Civil War-era granite fortification built between 1861 and 1869 to protect the Kennebec River approach to Bath. The state historic site is open 9 a.m. to sunset daily from April 15 to October 30, and a fee is charged. The sheltered Kennebec River at Popham is excellent for kayaking, and the paddle around the point into the Morse River coves is good for spotting harbor seals, ospreys, and great blue herons. Reid State Park, a short drive east, adds wide sandy beaches and rolling dunes for a change of scene. Bath, Brunswick, and Boothbay Harbor are all within easy day-trip range for provisions and meals.

The Popham camping season is short and clearly defined. Private campgrounds on the peninsula run roughly May through early October, and Meadowbrook Camping Area is open May 1 to October 1, which is representative of the area. July and August are peak weeks, driven by school vacations, beach weather, and the lifeguard window. The main parking lot at Popham is large but fills early on summer weekends and any sunny weekday in July or August. Arriving early on peak days is advised, or the lot may close to new arrivals. Pets are not allowed on beaches between April 1 and September 30, but from October 1 through March 31 pets are welcome on state park beaches, provided they are leashed at all times. That flips the shoulder season into a good option for RV travelers with dogs. Heat and cold waves, droughts, severe rainstorms, nor'easters, ice storms, and tornadoes are all part of Maine's normal climate, and in general nor'easters cause more disruption than any other type of extreme weather, generating heavy precipitation, strong winds, and coastal flooding. Sand movement resulting from beach dynamics has had a dramatic effect on Popham Beach, causing extreme shoreline change and dune erosion, so conditions and picnic areas can shift year to year.

Roads onto the Phippsburg peninsula are two-lane and wind through small villages, so plan slower drive times than the mileage suggests. Meadowbrook has 139 sites, including 42 tent-only sites, and can accommodate RVs up to 80 feet, which makes it one of the more big-rig friendly options in the area. Expect coastal weather swings, with patchy fog common in the morning before clearing. Tides matter at Popham. Visitors can no longer walk to Fox Island at low tide without crossing the mouth of the Morse River, and two hours after low tide the sandbars will likely be covered with cold, fast-moving water, so pay attention to avoid getting marooned. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until clear of the outward pull, then swim in to shore. Inexperienced swimmers and children should use caution, and due to consistently strong currents, attempts to swim to the islands are strongly discouraged. Cell coverage is generally good, but stock up on groceries in Bath before heading south.
