Camping near Richmond, Maine
Richmond sits on the Kennebec River in central Maine, roughly 12 miles south of Augusta and within easy reach of I-295. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the state capital region, the midcoast, and the lakes west of the river.
Private campgrounds cluster within a short drive. Augusta / Gardiner KOA Journey is located in Richmond itself at 30 Mallard Drive, with pull-through RV sites, cabins, and easy highway access from I-295 Exit 49. To the southeast, Chewonki Campgrounds occupies 50 acres overlooking a saltwater inlet along the Montsweag River in Wiscasset. The Birches Campground offers lake-focused stays on Cobbosseecontee Lake, while Thomas Point Beach and Campground fronts a tidal beach on Thomas Bay in Brunswick. More to Life Family Campground provides a pond-side, activity-driven option for families.
Day-use options are close at hand as well. Peacock Beach State Park on Pleasant Pond sits within Richmond and offers picnicking and swimming for a break between drives.
Things to do near Richmond
The Kennebec River corridor drives most trips. Paddling, fishing, and river-town walking in Richmond and Gardiner pair well with a visit to Old Fort Western in Augusta, a preserved colonial-era site with museum exhibits.
Water recreation is easy to string together. Cobbosseecontee Lake supports motor boating, kayaking, and swimming, and the meandering estuaries near Chewonki Campgrounds lead out toward the ocean for canoe and sea-kayak trips. Thomas Point Beach and Campground provides a sheltered tidal beach on Thomas Bay and hosts the long-running Bluegrass Festival on Labor Day weekend, one of the oldest continuously running bluegrass festivals in the eastern United States.
Day trips reach farther. Boothbay Harbor is within an hour's drive for whale watching and puffin cruises, and the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath sits roughly 23 miles from Richmond.

Overall I enjoyed renting out this van. It offered a comfortable north-south bed orientation for two people, plenty of bed room. The heating system worked well and the van conversion was great too.

We had a great experience with Jeff's van. When he says that you can venture into places other campers and vans can only dream of he isn't kidding. We used the van for a video production project in the North Maine Woods and traveled down logging roads and offshoots with no problem. There was plenty of power, USB and outlets for us to charge batteries, phones and watches which was critical. Pickup was a breeze. The van is very well equipped and stocked. I can tell you from personal experience that the mattress for the lower sleeping area is surprisingly comfortable. We didn't want for anything during our stay!

How to book
Private campgrounds in the area each run their own reservation systems. Augusta / Gardiner KOA Journey books through the KOA website or by phone, and applies KOA's standard cancellation policy with stricter terms for holiday weekends and monthly sites. Chewonki Campgrounds takes reservations by phone only, with deposits due within 10 days of booking and refunds available for cancellations received at least 21 days before arrival. Thomas Point Beach and Campground accepts reservations online or by phone.
For Maine state park campgrounds, bookings run through the Bureau of Parks and Lands system at CampWithMe.com or by call center. Reservations open in early February for the full summer season, cover parties of six or fewer, and are capped at 14 nights per stay, with a two-night minimum on weekends until July 1. Online reservations continue into mid-September, after which remaining sites become first-come, first-served through mid-October at most parks. Group sites are booked by calling the park directly.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Richmond skew rustic and family-oriented rather than resort-style. The KOA sits on a terraced hillside with long pull-throughs, and coastal parks like Chewonki and Thomas Point Beach lean toward wooded, waterfront pitches rather than tightly packed rows. Full hookups are available at Chewonki and some other private parks; Thomas Point Beach offers electric-only 20-amp sites without water or sewer at the site.
Cell service is generally reliable near I-295 and the Richmond and Brunswick areas but weakens on back roads and peninsulas. Firewood restrictions are strict statewide to slow the spread of the emerald ash borer, and Chewonki enforces a 50-mile radius rule on outside wood.
Bugs are a real factor. Black flies peak in late spring, mosquitoes run through summer, and ticks are active from spring through fall, so pack repellent and check daily.

Drain hoses and outdoor connections need extra care below freezing. Pro tip: if you're chasing fall foliage in late October or a winter ski adventure, message hosts directly and filter for listings open beyond the standard season.
