Chatham camping overview
Chatham sits at the elbow of Cape Cod, with most RV-friendly campgrounds clustered a short drive north and west in Brewster, Eastham, and the mid-Cape towns. The closest major public campground is Nickerson State Park in Brewster, with more than 400 campsites set in pine and oak forests that slope down to the banks of eight crystal-clear fresh water ponds. Private options nearby include Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort and Shady Knoll Campground in Brewster, Atlantic Oaks RV Park Campground in Eastham, and Sun Retreats Cape Cod in the mid-Cape area.
The region is a practical base for families: most parks sit within a short drive of both Cape Cod Bay and Atlantic-facing National Seashore beaches, and several touch or parallel the paved Cape Cod Rail Trail. Sweetwater Forest offers 250 naturally wooded campsites spread throughout 75-plus acres of native Cape Cod woodlands, with frontage on Snow's Pond, used for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Shady Knoll Campground sits about a mile from Cape Cod Bay and a half-mile from the Cape Cod Rail Trail.
Things to do near Chatham
Chatham itself offers the Chatham Lighthouse overlook, the Fish Pier where the commercial fleet unloads in the afternoon, and short boat trips to Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge for seal-watching. Beach days split between calm bayside flats and the surf of the Atlantic-facing National Seashore. Cyclists ride the paved Cape Cod Rail Trail, which runs through Brewster and Eastham close to several campgrounds. Whale-watching boats sail from Provincetown and Barnstable through the main camping months. Families staying at Nickerson State Park use the park's four ponds stocked year-round with trout for swimming, paddling, and fishing. Rainy-day options include the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, mini-golf along Route 6A, and the shops and seafood shacks in downtown Chatham.

The Cape Cod camping calendar is short and busy. Camping season in the Brewster area generally runs from April through October, with most campgrounds closed during the winter months. Nickerson opens April 16 with Area 4, the rest of the campground opens May 7, and the last night to camp is October 25, while Sweetwater Forest is open April 1 to November 1. Peak demand falls between the last week of June and Labor Day, when school is out and Atlantic water temperatures are warmest.
Late spring and the weeks after Labor Day are the most comfortable for RVers: lighter traffic on Route 6, easier ferry and parking access, and milder days. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest storm risk for southern New England in August and September, so outer-Cape sites can occasionally be evacuated or closed on short notice. Greenhead flies appear on marshy beaches in mid to late July. Winter visits are limited to off-season day use; campgrounds are closed and many town beach lots restrict parking.
How to book a campsite near Chatham
Reservations are essential on Cape Cod during summer. Nickerson State Park reservations are made through ReserveAmerica up to four months in advance, and reservations are required with no walk-in camping allowed. Out-of-state campers incur a per-night surcharge that funds the Nickerson State Park Trust. Massachusetts prohibits transporting firewood into or out of any DCR campground, so plan to buy wood on site. Private parks such as Sweetwater Forest, Shady Knoll Campground, Atlantic Oaks RV Park Campground, and Sun Retreats Cape Cod book directly through their own websites or phone lines; full-hookup and waterfront sites for July and August often sell out by late winter.
What to expect on site
Expect sandy, wooded sites under pitch pine and oak, with shaded but uneven pads. Comfort stations with hot showers and flush toilets are located throughout Nickerson, and a dump station serves RV campers, but no hookups are available. Standard sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 45 feet, though some loops have narrower, uneven sites better suited to smaller rigs, so verify suitability before booking. Cellular signal can be weak in the wooded interior. Private parks generally offer full hookups, laundry, camp stores, and pools; Cape Cod campgrounds often have narrow roads and limited turning radius, so larger rigs should ask about access ahead of arrival. Bring bug spray, a bike rack for the Rail Trail, and beach gear that handles both bay and ocean conditions.
