Campgrounds near Dennis, Massachusetts
Dennis sits mid-Cape on the Route 6A corridor in Massachusetts, with Cape Cod Bay to the north and Nantucket Sound to the south. The town works as a practical base for RV travelers because it puts most of the Cape's beaches, bike paths, and state parks within a short drive, and it is served by several private campgrounds along with the region's largest public campground a few exits east on Route 6.
Closest options include Old Chatham Road RV Campground in the Harwich area near the Cape Cod Rail Trail, along with Sun Retreats Cape Cod and Shady Knoll Campground for full-service private-park stays. Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort in Brewster leans wooded and family-oriented.
For a state-park experience, Nickerson State Park is a 1,900-acre public recreation area in Brewster, with sandy soil and scrub pines surrounding a chain of glacial kettle ponds. It is the anchor campground for the mid- and lower-Cape and typically fills earliest for summer weekends.
Things to do near Dennis
The Cape Cod Rail Trail is the headline outdoor draw. The paved, roughly 26-mile multi-use trail passes through Nickerson State Park and connects Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, and Orleans with mostly flat riding suitable for kids and towed bike trailers.
Beach days split between the calmer, warmer bay side, including Chapin, Mayflower, and Corporation Beach, and the surf beaches on the sound. Freshwater swimming is an easy alternative on hot afternoons: Nickerson's campsites sit in pine and oak forest sloping down to eight clear kettle ponds, four of which are stocked with trout for anglers, and kayak and canoe rentals are available on-site in season.
Mini-golf, ice cream stands, and the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History round out a rainy-day list.

July and August are peak. Beaches, ferries, and Route 6 traffic all crest in these weeks, and campground demand tracks the same curve. Weekend and holiday inventory for Nickerson State Park typically clears within hours of the four-month booking window opening, and private parks fill their full-hookup and pull-through sites earliest. Water temperatures on the sound side become swimmable by late June and hold into September.
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots for RV travelers who want open sites and quieter beaches. May, June, and September bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations while ocean water stays warm enough for swimming into mid-September.
Winter is off-season. Most private Cape campgrounds close in the fall and reopen in April or May, and Nickerson runs on a seasonal schedule from mid-April through mid-October. Plan winter trips around whichever private parks confirm year-round operation directly.
How to book a campsite
Public sites at Nickerson State Park are booked through the Massachusetts DCR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations open up to four months before the arrival date, and walk-in camping is not permitted, so a confirmed reservation is required before pulling in. New inventory during the peak season opens daily at 8 a.m. Eastern, and popular summer weekends can clear within minutes of release.
Private campgrounds near Dennis, including Old Chatham Road RV Campground, Sun Retreats Cape Cod, Shady Knoll Campground, and Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort, take bookings directly through their own websites or phone lines. Full-hookup sites and pull-throughs sell out earliest, especially for July and August weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Cape Cod campgrounds range from wooded state-park sites without hookups to full-service private resorts. Nickerson has 418 sites across multiple loops in pine and oak forest, plus yurts, with a dump station and comfort stations with hot showers and flush toilets, but no site hookups, so plan for battery and propane or a generator strategy allowed under park rules.
Roads inside Nickerson are narrow and winding. Standard sites can generally accommodate rigs up to about 45 feet, but some loops have tighter, uneven sites better suited to smaller RVs, so verify the specific site before booking.
A few Massachusetts DCR rules to know before arrival: alcoholic beverages are prohibited in state parks and campgrounds, pets must be leashed at all times and cannot be left unattended, and firewood may not be transported into or out of DCR campgrounds. Firewood is available for purchase on-site.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Dennis, MA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Dennis, MA?
RV rental in Dennis is one of the smarter ways to experience Cape Cod, especially compared to peak-summer hotel prices in Dennisport and South Dennis. On RVezy, you typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $300 per night, and larger Class A rigs and fifth wheels at the higher end. June through August is peak season on the Cape, so prices climb and inventory tightens quickly. For a cheap RV rental in Dennis, target mid-May or September shoulder weeks, book a stationary travel trailer that the host delivers, and filter for Instant Book listings to lock in better rates. Midweek pickups often save 10 to 20 percent off your total.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dennis,%20MassachusettsDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Dennis, MA?
Your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dennis, whether it's a campervan, Class C motorhome, or travel trailer. Massachusetts does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any RV-specific endorsement for the recreational vehicles available on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older and must upload a clear photo of their license so RVezy can verify identity before pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. No DMV trips and no extra paperwork stand between you and the Cape Cod Rail Trail.

Every RV rental in Dennis booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on Nantucket Sound sunsets instead of worst-case scenarios. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host. RVezy offers different tiers depending on how much peace of mind you want, from standard to premium options. Review the coverage details right before you confirm so you know exactly what's included on your Cape Cod adventure.

Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not individual hosts, so you get the same fair structure no matter which listing you choose for your Cape Cod trip. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, plus tiered refunds based on how far in advance you cancel before your trip start date. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits. Review the full cancellation terms during checkout so you know what applies to your dates. Book early to lock in your preferred RV, knowing you have clear options if plans shift before your Dennis getaway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Dennis RV trip?
Yes, and Dennis is one of Cape Cod's most pet-welcoming towns. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Dennis, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see listings where furry guests are welcome. Once you arrive, Chapin Memorial Beach allows leashed dogs in the off-season, and the Cape Cod Rail Trail running through Dennis is a leashed-dog favorite for long walks. Nickerson State Park in nearby Brewster permits leashed pets at campsites with proof of rabies vaccination at check-in, though dogs are not allowed on its pond beaches. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size notes so check-in is smooth.
mass.gov/locations/nickerson-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Dennis?
Yes, RV delivery in Dennis is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather not drive a large motorhome over the Sagamore Bridge. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV directly at campgrounds like Sun Retreats Old Chatham Road in South Dennis or Nickerson State Park in nearby Brewster. They level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything from the propane stove to the awning. Use the Delivery filter to see which hosts offer it, then message them with your campground name and dates. Delivery fees vary by distance, so booking a host based in Dennis or Yarmouth often costs less than one further up-Cape.
