Camping near East Harwich
East Harwich is a village in the town of Harwich on the elbow of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, bordered by Brewster to the north and Chatham to the southeast. The area puts RV travellers within a short drive of freshwater kettle ponds, protected bay beaches, and the Atlantic-facing shoreline of Cape Cod National Seashore.
The closest large public campground is Nickerson State Park in Brewster, a state-run property with hundreds of wooded sites. Nickerson's 418 campsites are set in pine and oak forests that slope down to the banks of eight fresh water ponds, and paved bicycle trails, freshwater swimming and spacious campsites are among the reasons it is one of Massachusetts' most popular campgrounds.
Private options fill in around Nickerson. Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort in Brewster is a long-running family campground on a freshwater pond, and Shady Knoll Campground, Old Chatham Road RV Campground, and Sun Retreats Cape Cod round out the choices for renters who want full hookups closer to town services.
Things to do near East Harwich
The Cape Cod Rail Trail is the anchor activity for campers. The park sits along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, providing direct access to the 22-mile paved route that connects multiple Cape Cod communities.
Inside Nickerson, the kettle ponds are the main draw. Visitors hike and bike, then head to the water to fish for trout, cool off with a swim, or rent a kayak. Motor use on the ponds is regulated: Big Cliff Pond is limited to a 10 HP maximum engine, and electric motors are allowed in Flax Pond and in all other ponds.
Off-property, the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches in Eastham and Wellfleet, Chatham Lighthouse Beach, and the seal-watching boats from Chatham Fish Pier are all within a short drive.

Cape Cod camping runs on a compressed season. Camping season in Nickerson State Park runs from mid-April through mid-October. Private campgrounds in the area follow a similar window, with some opening in early April and closing in late October or early November.
July and August are the peak. Book well ahead for July and August visits, when the combination of Cape Cod location and reasonable state park rates creates high demand. Late spring and early fall are quieter and cooler, with summers warm and often crowded, while spring and fall offer cooler temperatures and fewer visitors.
Weather to plan around includes coastal storms. Periodic events include extreme precipitation, severe storms, and, on occasion, tropical storms and hurricanes, with the coastline vulnerable to damage from powerful nor'easters. Hurricane risk is highest from mid-August through October.
How to book a site
Nickerson State Park uses the Massachusetts DCR system through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 4 months prior to the arrival date. Reservations are required and no walk-in camping is allowed. For peak weekends, book at the four-month mark, since campsites can fill quickly for summer and holiday weekends.
Private campgrounds such as Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort, Shady Knoll Campground, Old Chatham Road RV Campground, and Sun Retreats Cape Cod take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Full hookup sites go first, so lock those in early for summer weeks.
What to expect on site
Nickerson is rustic by RV-park standards. Nickerson State Campground has tent and RV sites, as well as yurts, but no electric hookups. Water spigots appear throughout each loop and a dump station serves RV users. Some sites have length restrictions, so verify suitability before reserving, and cell service is inconsistent inside the park.
Private campgrounds fill the hookup gap, with 30 and 50 amp service and full hookup sites suitable for larger rigs.
A few rules apply Cape-wide: Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, no other wood products may be brought into the campground, and transportation of firewood may result in eviction. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks and campgrounds.
