Campgrounds and RV parks near Harwich Center, MA

The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs through Harwich and connects to Nickerson State Park, giving campers direct paved cycling access to Brewster, Orleans, and Wellfleet. An 8-mile bike path from Nickerson connects to the 26-mile Rail Trail, which passes through six Cape Cod towns. Freshwater swimming, kayaking, and trout fishing are available at the park's kettle ponds, with four ponds stocked year-round with trout. Brewster Flats on Cape Cod Bay draw families at low tide, exposing a wide expanse of tidal flats along the bay side. Chatham Lighthouse Beach, seal-watching cruises, and the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches at Coast Guard and Nauset are all within a short drive. For rainy days, campers head to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster or the shops and restaurants in Chatham village.

Cape Cod campgrounds run on a tight seasonal window. Nickerson State Park is open from mid-April through mid-October, and private grounds follow a similar pattern. Shady Knoll Campground is seasonal, closed from mid-October through mid-May. Sun Retreats Cape Cod and other private options in the area typically run late April through the end of October. July and August are peak season. Sites at Nickerson and the popular private campgrounds fill weeks or months in advance, especially for weekends and holidays. Shoulder seasons in late May, June, and September offer easier availability, cooler nights, and thinner crowds, though ocean water remains cold well into June. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest storm risk in late August and September. Fog and coastal storms can disrupt travel in fall. Winter camping is not an option at any of the campgrounds listed here; renters looking for late-fall stays should confirm closing dates directly with the campground.

Sites here are wooded and sandy rather than open. Nickerson's campsites are set in pine and oak forests that slope down to the banks of eight freshwater ponds. Shade is plentiful, but sites can be uneven or sandy, and separation between neighbors varies loop to loop. RV length is a real constraint. Shady Knoll Campground accommodates tents, pop-ups, and RVs up to 38 feet, with narrow interior roads. Nickerson can accommodate rigs up to about 45 feet on some loops, though other loops have narrower sites better suited to smaller rigs, so renters should verify site dimensions before booking. Full hookups are limited at the state park; private grounds offer more electric, water, and sewer options. Cell coverage is inconsistent inside Nickerson, and Wi-Fi is not provided. Private campgrounds generally offer Wi-Fi, a camp store, laundry, and hot showers. Pets are welcome at most sites on leash; confirm pet rules and beach restrictions before arrival.
