Campgrounds near Harwich Port
Harwich Port sits on the south shore of Cape Cod, roughly midway between the Cape Cod Canal bridges and the Outer Cape. Most RV-friendly campgrounds nearby cluster inland in Brewster, South Dennis, and East Falmouth, within a short drive of Harwich Port's beaches on Nantucket Sound. The area combines wooded, kettle-pond terrain with easy access to the paved Cape Cod Rail Trail and Cape Cod Bay.
Options range from large private resorts to a state park. Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort and Shady Knoll Campground are both in Brewster, a short drive north. Old Chatham Road RV Campground is in South Dennis, a few minutes west of Harwich. Sun Retreats Cape Cod is farther west in East Falmouth, useful for travelers combining Harwich with Falmouth and the ferries to Martha's Vineyard.
For a public-land alternative, Nickerson State Park in Brewster is the largest campground in the region and the only state-run option nearby, with 418 sites set among pine and oak forests near several freshwater ponds.
Things to do near Harwich Port
The Cape Cod Rail Trail is the anchor activity for most RV trips to this stretch of the Cape. The paved path follows a former railroad right-of-way for roughly 25 miles through Yarmouth, Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham, and Wellfleet, with few hills and well-marked road crossings suitable for family cyclists.
Freshwater swimming and paddling are easy day trips. Nickerson State Park contains eight kettle ponds with designated swimming areas and small-boat access, and four ponds are stocked with trout. Motor and horsepower limits apply on the ponds, so check current rules before launching.
On Cape Cod Bay, the Brewster Flats form an unusually wide expanse of tidal flats, walkable at low tide. Harwich Port itself offers Nantucket Sound beaches, harbor cruises, and ferry service to Nantucket from Saquatucket Harbor.

Summer is peak season and coincides with the warmest pond and ocean temperatures. Daytime highs typically run in the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit, with cool nights, and Cape Cod pond and Nantucket Sound water reach their warmest from late July through August. Expect heavy weekend and holiday demand at all campgrounds during this window.
Shoulder seasons offer easier bookings and milder conditions. How to book a campsite near Harwich Port
Nickerson State Park uses the Massachusetts DCR reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Online reservations open on a rolling four-month window, walk-in camping is not permitted, and same-day reservations are accepted until 2 pm on the arrival date. Summer weekends and holidays sell out quickly, so booking as soon as the four-month window opens is recommended.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort, Shady Knoll Campground, and Old Chatham Road RV Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone, and Sun Retreats Cape Cod reserves through the Sun Outdoors network. Full-hookup sites and waterfront spots at private parks fill fastest during peak season.
Do not bring firewood from home. Buy it locally on arrival, since Nickerson sells bundles on site.
What to expect at Harwich Port campgrounds
Sites are typically wooded and sandy, and most private parks offer full or partial hookups with a mix of pull-through and back-in spots. Old Chatham Road RV Campground, Shady Knoll Campground, and Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort all offer electric, water, and sewer hookups at many sites, and cable is available at some. Rig-length limits vary by park, so confirm site dimensions when booking a larger motorhome or fifth wheel.
Nickerson State Park is different. It has no electric or water hookups at any site, though a dump station is provided for RVs, and standard sites can accommodate rigs up to 45 feet with some loops better suited to smaller rigs.
Wi-Fi and cell coverage vary. Private campgrounds generally offer Wi-Fi, but coverage at Nickerson is limited and cellular signal can be weak. Alcohol is prohibited in all Massachusetts state parks and campgrounds.
