Camping near Nantucket
Nantucket Island itself has no public campgrounds or RV parks open to the general public. Town bylaws prohibit overnight stays in tents, RVs, or vehicles on beaches, public lands, and undeveloped areas, and the only camp facility on-island, Camp Richard, is reserved for nationally chartered Scouting America units. Vehicle ferry space for RVs is also limited and books far in advance, so most RV travelers base themselves on Cape Cod and visit Nantucket as a day trip via passenger ferry from Hyannis.
The practical camping base for a Nantucket trip is the Brewster and Harwich area of the Lower Cape, roughly a half-hour drive from the Hyannis ferry terminals. Nickerson State Park anchors the region, and private options nearby include Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort, Shady Knoll Campground, and Old Chatham Road RV Campground.
Further up-Cape, Sun Retreats Cape Cod offers a larger resort-style property with pools and rental accommodations. From any of these bases, day trips to Nantucket are made by leaving the RV at the campground and taking a passenger-only fast ferry.
Things to do near Nantucket
Day-tripping to Nantucket usually centers on the cobblestoned downtown, the Whaling Museum, and the beaches at Jetties, Surfside, and Madaket. Bikes come across on the ferry easily, and paved paths reach most corners of the island. Rentals are also available near Straight Wharf on arrival.
On the mainland side, Nickerson State Park has eight freshwater kettle ponds for swimming, paddling, and stocked trout fishing, plus miles of wooded trails. An eight-mile spur connects the park to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, a paved multi-use path running roughly 26 miles across the Lower Cape.
Brewster, Chatham, and Orleans add tidal flats on Cape Cod Bay, working harbors, seal-watching cruises, and the outer beaches of Cape Cod National Seashore within a short drive.

Most Cape Cod campgrounds, including Nickerson State Park, operate roughly mid-April through mid-October, with the heaviest demand from late June through Labor Day. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill first: at Nickerson, online reservations open four months in advance and popular loops book quickly for July and August.
Spring and early fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier campsite availability. September and early October are often considered the sweet spot for RV travel on the Cape, with warm days, cool Atlantic water, and shorter ferry lines to Nantucket. Nor'easters and tropical systems become more likely from late August into October.
Winter camping is not a realistic option in this region. Private campgrounds close for the season, DCR state park camping ends by late October, and Nantucket itself sees short days, damp cold, and reduced ferry frequency. Travelers who want a quiet visit generally aim for shoulder-season weekdays instead.
How to book
Nickerson State Park reservations are handled through ReserveAmerica for the Massachusetts DCR. Bookings open up to four months before the arrival date, walk-in registration is not accepted, and out-of-state campers pay a legislated per-night surcharge that funds the park. Sites include standard tent and RV pads plus unheated yurts with bunk beds, tables, and access to water and electricity.
Private campgrounds such as Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort, Shady Knoll Campground, Old Chatham Road RV Campground, and Sun Retreats Cape Cod take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines, and full-hookup and big-rig sites tend to sell out earliest for summer weekends.
For the island itself, book passenger ferry tickets through the Steamship Authority or Hy-Line Cruises well ahead for July, August, and holiday weekends.
What to expect
Lower Cape campgrounds sit in sandy pine and oak woodland. Sites at Nickerson State Park are spacious but uneven, do not have hookups, and are served by shared dump stations and bathhouses. Private parks in Brewster and Harwich generally offer water and electric, with a smaller number of full-hookup pads suitable for larger rigs.
Interior roads at Nickerson and some private campgrounds are narrow and curved, which restricts the longest RVs to specific loops. Cell service is inconsistent in the woods and Wi-Fi is not available inside Nickerson.
Plan the Nantucket day trip separately: park the RV at the campground, drive to the Hyannis terminal, and take the passenger ferry. Bringing an RV onto the island by vehicle ferry is impractical due to limited space, high fares, and narrow town streets.
