Campgrounds and RV parks near Northwest Harwich, MA

The Cape Cod Rail Trail is the region's marquee cycling route, a paved path that runs through Harwich and links directly into Nickerson State Park's internal bike network. Nickerson's 8-mile internal paved bike path system connects directly to the 26-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail, making it easy to spend days exploring Cape Cod by bike right from a campsite. Freshwater swimming is a major draw. The park sits beside eight crystal-clear kettle ponds that are ideal for swimming, kayaking, and fishing, and four ponds are stocked year-round with trout. Saltwater beaches on Nantucket Sound (Red River, Pleasant Road, Bank Street) and on Cape Cod Bay are all within a short drive. Harwich Port has ferry service to Nantucket, plus restaurants, ice cream, and mini-golf. Chatham's lighthouse, fish pier, and downtown are roughly fifteen minutes east.

Cape Cod camping is a seasonal affair. Most private campgrounds and the state park operate from mid-spring through mid-fall. Nickerson State Park typically opens in mid-April and closes in mid-October, and Sweetwater Forest Camping Resort operates from April 1 through November 1. Winter camping options in the immediate area are extremely limited. July and August are peak season. Sites at Nickerson and the popular private resorts fill months in advance for summer weekends, and traffic on Route 6 into the Lower Cape can be heavy on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings. Beach parking lots fill early in the day. Late spring and early fall offer the best balance for RV travelers. May, June, September, and early October bring milder temperatures, better availability, and quieter beaches, though ocean water temperatures are cool outside July and August. Fall foliage on the Cape is modest compared with inland New England, but the shoulder-season quiet and still-open restaurants make it a strong window for a longer stay.

Sites in this part of the Cape are typically set in pine and oak forest on sandy soil. Nickerson State Park features 418 campsites spread across multiple loops within pine and oak forests, each with a picnic table and fire ring, comfort stations with hot showers and flush toilets, water spigots on each loop, and a dump station serving RV campers, but no electric or water hookups are available at sites. Standard sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 45 feet, though some loops have narrower, uneven sites better suited to smaller rigs. Private campgrounds tend to offer more amenities. Sweetwater Forest features 250 wooded campsites across 75-plus acres with frontage on Snow's Pond, a mix of full-hookup and primitive sites, 50-amp service, and sites that can accommodate rigs up to 45 feet. Cell coverage is generally reliable, mosquitoes and ticks are common in wooded loops, and quiet hours are enforced at most parks.
